A large-scale search operation spanning over a month to locate a 20-year-old young man who mysteriously vanished in Georgia has come to a tragic close. According to the victim’s family, his body has been recovered in a heavily wooded area, ending weeks of desperate waiting for his loved ones.

Specifically, search crews with Georgia Emergency Search & Rescue (GAESAR) discovered the body of Derek Samuel in a wooded area located directly behind the Reserve at Redwine Apartments complex. This field area is near the 3000 block of Redwine Road, aligning perfectly with the final perimeter where authorities suspected the victim was last seen before his disappearance. Representatives from the rescue team stated that K-9 handler Jim Lopez and his specialized service dog, K-9 Jager, were the first to track the scent and locate the body on May 31, 2026. East Point Police Department officers arrived on-scene immediately afterward to assist with cordoning off the area and conducting initial procedural steps.

This heartbreaking development follows relentless, weeks-long efforts by both the family and security agencies since April 29, the day Derek Samuel abruptly disappeared after leaving a Target store at the Camp Creek Marketplace shopping center. Prior to this, his loved ones had been desperate for answers, even offering a $15,000 reward for any information leading to his safe return.

In the process of retracing clues, investigators meticulously reviewed local surveillance footage. The security video showed that before his disappearance, Derek Samuel did not appear to be in distress, anxious, or threatened when he parted ways with the two friends he was with. Notably, those same two friends were the ones who proactively contacted and reported the matter to law enforcement after not hearing from Derek for an extended period. Although police had previously traced the final signal from the victim’s cellphone to an area near Redwine Road, and subsequently expanded searches to nearby Lithonia, those prior field operations yielded no evidence.

While Samuel’s family has come forward to confirm that the recovered body belongs to their son, the East Point Police Department maintains a highly cautious stance. Authorities confirmed they are actively investigating the case but have not yet released an official identification of the remains. Furthermore, the entire sequence of circumstances leading to the young man’s death remains shrouded in mystery. Officials have not yet been able to confirm whether Derek walked away from the area voluntarily or if he was forcibly taken or kidnapped. To date, authorities have not named any suspects or persons of interest in connection with the case.

Faced with a devastating reality, Derek Samuel’s family expressed total heartbreak but also a sense of closure after a month of agonizing uncertainty. In a moving joint statement, the family shared: “Although this is not the outcome we all prayed for, unfortunately, it has now become our reality. Thank you to everyone who has prayed on our behalf, and we ask that you continue to keep us covered in your prayers as we navigate this difficult time. It’s hard, y’all, we just ask for some privacy to grieve now, please.”

On the side of the rescue operations, Angel Alonso, a member of the GAESAR team, shared deep empathy: “It’s hard because of the outcome, but I’m glad that they got closure, and now they can move forward, but this is what we do; this is our job.” Currently, the coroner’s office is working to conduct an autopsy to clarify both the cause and manner of death.
