Prince Louis Has His Heart Set on a Wimbledon Dream Job — But Princess Kate Reveals There’s One Big Surprise

Prince Louis may still be years away from qualifying, but the youngest Wales child already has an ambitious goal for his future—and it involves one of Wimbledon’s most recognizable traditions.
During her appearance at the Wimbledon women’s singles final, the Princess of Wales delighted tennis fans by revealing that eight-year-old Prince Louis has been asking how he can become one of the tournament’s famous ball boys.
Kate Reveals Louis’ New Dream
Before taking her seat in the Royal Box, Princess Catherine spent time meeting members of Wimbledon’s court services team and tournament staff.
While chatting with 18-year-old court services team member Jenna Fontanilla, the Princess shared a sweet family story that quickly captured the attention of royal fans.
According to Fontanilla, Catherine explained that Prince Louis had been asking questions about becoming a Wimbledon ball boy after learning about the role.
“He was asking how to become a ball boy,” Fontanilla later recalled, adding that the Princess listened with genuine interest as staff explained the demanding selection process.
A Coveted Role at Wimbledon
Although the job may seem simple, becoming a Wimbledon ball boy or ball girl is one of the most competitive opportunities available to young tennis enthusiasts.
Each year, around 1,400 teenagers apply for the prestigious role, but only about 280 are selected.
Successful applicants spend months training, learning everything from court positioning and ball handling to remaining perfectly still between points.
Training begins as early as February, with recruits completing physical drills, written assessments and practice sessions before the Championships begin.
The Pay Isn’t Why They Do It
Despite working at one of the world’s biggest sporting events, Wimbledon ball boys and girls receive only a modest £200 stipend to help cover expenses during the tournament.
However, participants also receive meals, refreshments and get to keep their official Ralph Lauren Wimbledon uniform.
For many teenagers, the biggest reward is the chance to stand just metres away from the world’s greatest tennis players on Centre Court.
Catherine Wins Hearts Again
The Princess once again earned praise for her warm and approachable manner during her behind-the-scenes visit.
Fontanilla described meeting Catherine as an unforgettable experience.
“She’s so genuine. She made everything feel so natural.”
She added that Catherine’s friendly smile immediately helped calm her nerves.
Many royal fans have long admired the Princess for making people feel comfortable during public engagements, and her conversations with Wimbledon staff once again highlighted that quality.
A Royal Family That Loves Tennis
Wimbledon has become one of the Wales family’s favorite annual traditions.
As patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, Princess Catherine regularly attends the Championships and presents the winners’ trophies.
This year she has been joined by Prince William, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, while Prince Louis stayed home—but judging by his latest ambition, it may not be long before the youngest Wales child dreams of taking an even more active role at tennis’ most famous tournament.
Whether or not he ever becomes a Wimbledon ball boy, Louis has already shown he shares his mother’s love for the sport.
