Fox host Greg Gutfeld

Fox News host Greg Gutfeld, the face of the network’s late-night show Gutfeld!, is stepping outside his usual lane this week with an appearance on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The crossover marks Gutfeld’s first visit to a major network late-night talk show and comes as his star power in the genre continues to grow.

The timing couldn’t be better for Gutfeld. While traditional late-night programs on broadcast TV are facing steep declines—culminating in CBS announcing that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will end next year—Gutfeld’s show is thriving. Nielsen ratings show Gutfeld! leading the late-night pack, averaging just over 3.1 million viewers and nearly 400,000 in the coveted key demo. Since news of Colbert’s cancellation, his numbers have climbed 11% in total viewers and 4% in the demo.

Part of Gutfeld’s success lies in his efficient operation. Unlike Colbert’s program, which reportedly cost CBS around $100 million annually and employed 200 staffers, Gutfeld! runs on a lean team of about 20 and operates on a budget far below double-digit millions. Former late-night host Samantha Bee recently called CBS’ decision to pull the plug on Colbert a “no-brainer,” citing the show’s heavy financial losses.

Gutfeld hasn’t missed the opportunity to gloat. On his Friday broadcast, he poked fun at Colbert’s recent interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris, quipping:

“While Colbert interviews a loser, Jimmy Fallon invites … a winner.”

The Fox host went on to hype his Fallon appearance, joking, “It’s the biggest crossover since the Harlem Globetrotters visited the Golden Girls,” and added that Fallon’s invitation shows he’s “not afraid of upsetting his peers or of my mesmerizing charm.”

Gutfeld’s guest spot on The Tonight Show not only underscores his unusual dominance in the late-night space but also highlights a shift in the landscape—where smaller, more agile productions are now outshining the traditional network giants.
