An expert points to a stark disconnect between the polite press coverage and the physical toll clearly visible on Charles.

The Palace and the broadsheets are sticking to a script of steady optimism — yet for one royal expert, the photography suggests otherwise. Writing for The Royalist, Tom Sykes argues that recent images of King Charles are beginning to reveal a reality that the domestic media outlets are simply too cautious to acknowledge. Following the monarch’s recent high-profile appearance with the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu, the expert points to a stark disconnect between the polite press coverage and the physical toll clearly visible on Charles.

“I have to say, the King’s appearance today with the President of Nigeria was worrying. He did not look well,” Sykes wrote on his Substack — dismissing the carefully curated optics of recovery that the Palace has worked so tirelessly to project. Despite the carefully staged public appearance, the expert argued, the camera often captures what a press release cannot sanitize. “We are now in a very odd situation where the British papers are barely acknowledging that the King is seriously ill,” Sykes highlighted, noting, “but on the evidence of the pictures, he looked weak, tired, and exhausted, with even more than usually swollen hands.”
According to the expert, the King appeared ‘very pale,’ and the physical symptoms — specifically his ‘noticeably swollen’ hands — suggest a visible fragility that places Charles’ future commitments under a shadow of uncertainty, particularly his alleged visit to the US for their 250th Independence Anniversary. While reports suggest that the state visit will proceed as per schedule, Sykes highlights the telling absence of a formal announcement. “I suspect that any delay in formally announcing the trip has much more to do with Charles’ health and whether he is truly capable of undertaking it,” he wrote, suggesting that the delay isn’t rooted in political red tape, but the King’s physical capacity to endure the hardships of international travel.

His health is something that has allegedly also left Queen Camilla worried. According to Sykes, the Queen Consort is reportedly “keen for him to do less and slow down.” With the proposed dates now just four to five weeks away, the expert notes that the Palace is feeling quite confident that the King will be able to fulfill his royal duties without any issues. “But based on today’s photographs, I think there is real cause for concern,” detailed Sykes, highlighting that while diplomatic tensions rarely halt a tour, physical health is a different matter entirely.

For the expert, the latest images of Charles play a very important role in the rapidly shifting royal narrative. Whether discussing the ‘untenable’ future of Prince Harry’s involvement with the Invictus Games or the monarch’s ability to remain the visible face of the Commonwealth, Sykes leans on the visual evidence as the ultimate truth-teller. The British media, he argues, often follows tradition and stays polite while talking about the King — but the latest photos are a serious reminder of his health struggles.
