A graduation ceremony, intended to be a memorable milestone, turned into a scene of chaos this past Wednesday evening in Fairfield, Northern California. A horrific shooting erupted in the parking lot of Fairfield High School, shortly after the commencement ceremony for Sem Yeto High School concluded.

According to authorities, an 18-year-old male was killed at the scene. Additionally, three other victims, aged 11, 20, and 25, were rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment following the attack. The incident occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m., as crowds of students, parents, and friends gathered to take commemorative photos near Schafer Stadium.

Fairfield police identified this as a “large-scale incident”. While the investigation is ongoing, it has not been confirmed whether the 18-year-old victim was a student at the school. The suspects remain at large, though police have reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Witnessing the horrific event, those present were deeply shaken. Fairfield Police Officer Michelle Belyea shared emotionally: “Kind of traumatized for everyone here who had to witness it. It’s outrageous. It’s sad. Prayers for everyone affected by it. I’m so sorry you had to go through that.”.

Many witnesses at the scene described the moments of panic as gunshots rang out repeatedly. Amanda Prieto, a resident living near the school, recounted: “It dawned on me quickly how close that rapid fire was. I looked over the fence and people were just screaming and running through the parking lot. It was horrific.”. Another witness named Alyssa expressed her frustration: “People keep getting shot at this school and it’s [not] getting fixed. It’s sad. It’s really sad.”.

The Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District confirmed that law enforcement is currently processing the scene and declined to provide further details as this is an “active investigation”. Meanwhile, Fairfield Mayor Catherine Moy addressed the incident: “My heart is breaking for the students and families involved. I’m shaken to my soul. The shooter will face justice.”.

At present, authorities are actively gathering evidence and have not yet released any information regarding the perpetrator’s motive.
