Princess Kate’s quiet moment of ‘solidarity’ in myth-busting evening gown
The Princess of Wales wore an unexpected gown while attending a gala dinner in aid of the Action on Addiction charity in 2013

he Princess of Wales’ evening gown collection is one of the most impressive of all the royal ladies. Her wardrobe comprises pieces in soft pastel tones and bright jewel colours, but in 2013, she donned a gown that broke what many believe to be a golden rule.
Kate, 44, usually reserves black gowns for funerals and memorial events, for example, Remembrance Day. However, while attending a gala dinner in aid of Action on Addiction hosted by the 100 Women in Hedge Funds Philanthropic Initiatives in London, she proved the idea that she never wears black to evening events is a myth.

The royal, who is the patron of the Action on Addiction charity, opted for a black Jenny Packham gown with capped sleeves, a cinched waist, and a V-shaped neckline. She accessorised with a diamond bangle and wore her signature brunette locks in blow-dried curls.
Why did Kate choose this look?
We asked stylist Sian Clarke of Styled by Sian to analyse Kate’s choice of wearing black, a colour that we see less frequently on her, to this event.
“That decision feels both thoughtful and intentional. Wearing black in this setting doesn’t suggest a desire to stand out; it does the opposite,” she says. “It signals a conscious choice to step back and honour the purpose of the evening, rather than draw attention to herself. Black carries a quiet strength; it represents courage, elegance, and composure.”

The then-Duchess of Cambridge’s gown had a subtle elegance to it
The stylist adds that by choosing such a timeless and understated colour, Kate strikes a balance between looking effortlessly chic and respectfully blending into the background. “There’s a sense of confidence in that choice; feeling secure enough not to be the focal point.
“More importantly, it feels like a gesture of respect. Not only toward the mission of breaking the stigma around addiction, but also toward the individuals and families who experience its impact every day. Through something as simple as colour, she communicates solidarity, sensitivity, and quiet strength.”
Kate’s Jenny Packham collection
The princess owns several other Jenny Packham gowns, and in fact, her most glamorous dresses to date have all been pieces by the British designer.
Most recently, she made a statement in blue as she arrived at Windsor Castle for the German state banquet last December. Her gown featured an asymmetrical neckline and a sequinned bodice and skirt with caped shoulders.
It was styled with the glittering Queen Victoria’s Oriental Circlet Tiara, a new tiara for Prince William‘s wife.
