A father and daughter from the Memphis area were found shot dead inside a crashed vehicle on a rural Mississippi road after heading to a Facebook Marketplace meetup to buy a PlayStation 5, authorities and family members say.

Deputies responding to a reported single-vehicle crash around 7 a.m. Sunday, March 1, along River Road in Panola County discovered two people inside the vehicle who were already dead, according to a Panola County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Authorities identified the victims as 39-year-old Victor Gonzalez and his 19-year-old daughter, Serenity Gonzalez, per the release. The case is being investigated as a double homicide, according to FOX13 Memphis, ABC24 Memphis and WREG.

“We did receive a call Sunday morning around 7 of a one-car wreck,” Panola County Sheriff Shane Phelps said, per FOX13 Memphis. “On arrival of our deputies, they noticed one victim was deceased, and shortly thereafter the other victim as well was deceased.”

“There’s a lot I can’t say right now,” Phelps told the outlet. “Hopefully in the near future we’ll be able to put more information out.”

Family members told the outlets that Victor Gonzalez and his daughter had planned to meet someone about purchasing a PlayStation 5 listed on Facebook Marketplace.

Jessie Waterman — Victor Gonzalez’s son and Serenity Gonzalez’s brother — said the pair had left home to buy the gaming console.

“They were going to get a PlayStation 5 off of Facebook Marketplace … and something must’ve happened with the transaction,” Waterman told ABC24 Memphis. “From what it looks like, they were trying to flee based on the tracks on the road and the mud on the side of the van.”
