The incident occurred late on the night of May 29 at Ge Cafe, a popular establishment in the heart of Da Nang. According to Hai Chau ward officials, the tourist exhibited aggressive behavior, causing damage estimated at VND500 million ($26,400).
The Sequence of Events

According to Ge Cafe’s management, the incident began when the man arrived at the cafe late at night. When staff approached him to request that he order at the counter, he refused and displayed unusual behavior. When another customer offered their phone to assist with translation, the suspect allegedly refused to return it, and “only laughed and continued scrolling through messages”.
Sensing the situation was escalating, staff contacted security. However, before assistance could arrive, the man began his destructive spree. He removed his shirt, smashed a customer’s phone, and threatened the patrons by “telling everyone they had 10 seconds to leave the store”.
In his fit of rage, the man vandalized bar equipment, decor, tempered glass doors, and destroyed customer belongings, including laptops and phones.
Confrontation and Arrest
Many customers on the second and third floors were trapped as the scene unfolded. When police arrived approximately five minutes later, the suspect attempted to flee to the second floor, where he scuffled with several patrons and “grabbed one male customer by the neck”.
Police successfully surrounded and apprehended the suspect at approximately 00:30 on May 30, 2026. Throughout the arrest process, the suspect was described as “uncooperative, shouting and resisting arrest”.
Aftermath
Images of the wreckage—including broken coffee machines, shattered glass, and destroyed laptops—have garnered significant attention online. Despite a wave of global support and offers of donations, the cafe owners have declined to accept any financial assistance.
Ge Cafe has announced a temporary closure of up to three days for repairs. According to VN Express, the suspect remains in detention as the investigation continues. Local officials noted the chaotic nature of the event: “Seeing the visitor causing a disturbance, many customers ran outside without time to take their belongings, which were destroyed”.
The incident has caused significant distress within the local community and among tourists in one of Da Nang’s most bustling areas.
