A thrilling period drama has arrived for streaming, bringing to life a beloved literary classic.Netflix fans can enjoy a surprise addition as Sandokan: The Pirate Prince became available on the platform this morning, Monday, January 19.
Drawing from Emilio Salgari’s celebrated novel of the same title, Sandokan: The Pirate Prince unfolds in 1800s Borneo, a tropical haven home to indigenous Dayak communities yet under firm British colonial rule.The titular pirate Sandokan (portrayed by Can Yaman) sustains himself and his crew through perilous raids whilst evading capture from his adversaries.
According to the official synopsis: “But when a raid brings Sandokan into contact with Marianne (Alanah Bloor), the independent, restless daughter of the British consul in Labuan, their kindred spirits ignite in a passion that will transform both their lives forever.”Sandokan faces competition for Marianne’s affections from “fanatical pirate hunter” Lord James Brooke (Ed Westwick), who sees marriage to her as both a romantic and strategic opportunity to advance his career.

What makes this Netflix production particularly compelling is the casting of Gossip Girl’s Ed Westwick, famous for his portrayal of Chuck Bass, in the role of Lord James Brooke.
The ensemble also features Daydreamer’s Can Yaman, John Hannah from Four Weddings And A Funeral and The Mummy, and Alanah Bloor of Man Vs Baby.
The synopsis wraps up by stating: “As their affair begins, Sandokan finds himself dogged by his and Marianne’s fight for their freedom which brings them into the centre of a much bigger story: the struggle of the indigenous Dayak people, whom the British have oppressed and exploited for years.”
