Though Vonn’s inbox was flooded with messages from the global athletic community, William’s letter stood out because of its traditional delivery.

The margin between a gold medal and a career-ending disaster in alpine skiing is measured in mere inches, a reality American legend Lindsey Vonn faced head-on during the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Games. The February 8 crash almost cost Vonn her leg—but the aftermath brought an outpouring of global support, including a very personal gesture by Prince William. In a new interview with Vanity Fair published on March 26, the skiing icon revealed that the Prince of Wales privately reached out to her with a typed letter just days after the accident.
The heir apparent—no stranger to the slopes himself—sent the letter to Vonn on February 16 to praise her ‘resilience’ following the harrowing crash. In the letter—which the three-time Olympic medalist shared on her Instagram—the future king acknowledged the brutal nature of her sport. “As you have often said, in downhill skiing, there are just a few inches that can determine the difference between a clean run and a serious crash,” William wrote. He continued, “The way you wrote about stepping into the start gate with courage and no regrets says so much about your resilience and is one of the many reasons why you have been an inspiration to so many people throughout your illustrious career.” Lastly, the Prince added a handwritten note in blue ink, sending Vonn his “very best wishes” for the road ahead.

The personal nature of the outreach was a highlight of her recovery, said Vonn. Though her inbox was flooded with messages from the global athletic community, William’s letter stood out because of its traditional delivery. In the Instagram video, she further said that it “took a long time to get to me, because it was actually a letter.” Vonn admitted that she was stunned to learn that the Prince of Wales was aware of her Olympic journey, noting, “It means a lot” to have that level of recognition. As a response to the royal gesture, she was quick to extend an invitation. Vonn offered to hit the slopes with William and his family once she got back on her feet. “I offered to ski with him and his family if they ever want to… Maybe in a while… But at some point,” she highlighted.
A skiing summit is a natural fit for the Prince of Wales, who has made the Swiss and French Alps a second home for his family. William and Princess Catherine have spent years introducing Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis to the sport during private getaways to Courchevel, providing a rare opportunity for the young royals to enjoy the slopes away from the constant watch of the media.

William has often used his platform for people facing health crises. From his emotional bond with the late Rob Burrow to his support for Sven-Göran Eriksson, the Prince of Wales’s often hand-signed “W” messages have become a hallmark of his empathetic royal style. And now, Vonn has joined the company as well.
