A “rousing” British period drama starring Anne-Marie Duff, Meryl Streep, and Helena Bonham Carter is streaming for free on Channel 4. Suffragette, directed by Sarah Gavron, is set in 1912 and follows laundry worker Maud (Carey Mulligan), whose life is turned upside down when she joins the fierce fight to secure the right to vote for women in Britain.

The historical film about the suffrage movement also stars Brendan Gleeson and Ben Whishaw.
This isn’t the first time Suffragette has been made available on Channel 4, but it was taken off the broadcaster’s streaming platform in August 2025.

Suffragette was a hit among cinemagoers and critics alike on its release, grossing $38 million against a budget of $14 million.
The film currently holds a 73% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics’ consensus reading: “Suffragette dramatizes an important – and still painfully relevant – fact-based story with more than enough craft and sincerity to overcome its flaws.”

In its review, The Times said Suffragette was: “A rousing, demonstrative tale, and Mulligan not only shows the right sort of ardour, but also adds a bit of subtlety.”

The Age wrote: “It’s a graceful, serious-minded period piece that never quite comes to life, although it tells its story clearly and is at pains to place a sympathetic figure at its centre.”
Many heaped praise on lead star Mulligan for her turn as Maud, with the Minneapolis Star Tribune adding: “Mulligan, in particular, delivers, bringing believability to a role that’s quite a stretch, given the transformation her character has to go through from workaday mum to first-wave feminist superhero.”
Meanwhile, Rolling Stone said: “In a sea of Hollywood escapism, Suffragette – flaws and all – is a movie that matters.”
On IMDb, it has been described by fans as “outstanding” and “a finely crafted British film”.
Suffragette is streaming now on Channel 4.
