Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway‘s characters had a very awkward onscreen reunion in the first trailer for their highly-anticipated sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2, which dropped Sunday.
The preview began with Runway Magazine editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly (Streep) seated in her office as her former beleaguered assistant Andrea ‘Andy’ Sachs (Hathaway) entered with a big smile and ‘hello.’
It’s been 20 years so Priestly turned to her art director Nigel Kipling (Stanley Tucci), who hinted: ‘Well, look what T.J. Maxx dragged in.’

‘Sorry,’ the icy fashionista – who’s nearing retirement – shrugged.
‘Who is this? Do you know her? Do I know her?’
Sachs – who was hired as Runway’s new fashion editor – replied, ‘I’m Andy Sachs. Andrea?’ to no avail.

The forgetful issue arises soon after as the trio meet with Priestly’s former senior assistant Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt), who’s now a ‘rival executive competing for advertising revenue amidst declining print media.’
‘You also know her?’ the cruel tastemaker marveled.
‘We were at Runway at the same time, Miranda,’ Charlton dryly replied.
Fans of the original 2006 film will recall how the former New York Mirror staffer strutted away from a Paris Fashion Week event and tossed her phone into a fountain, quitting her job, after Priestly praised her ruthless ambition.
The $41 million-budget, critically-acclaimed adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel amassed $326.7 million at the global box office.
The reaction to The Devil Wears Prada 2 trailer was swift with YouTube user @Kardlonoc commenting: ‘Miranda completely forgetting the events of the first movie because they were beneath her is a great move.’
YouTube user @maxcouture9314 agreed: ‘Miranda pretending not to know Andy is everything.’
Over on Instagram, user @diego_justdiego_ declared that Priestly not remembering Andy was ‘pure comedy and so right too.’
’20 years have already passed and they are better than ever!’ Instagram user javieroooking commented.

Original director David Frankel, writer Aline Brosh McKenna, producers Wendy Finerman and Karen Rosenfelt, cinematographer Florian Ballhaus, makeup department head Nicki Ledermann and music supervisor Julia Michels all returned for The Devil Wears Prada 2.
The 117-minute flick also features Kenneth Branagh, Justin Theroux, Tracie Thoms, Tibor Feldman, Lucy Liu, Sydney Sweeney, Donatella Versace, Lady Gaga, Pauline Chalamet, B. J. Novak, Rachel Bloom, Simone Ashley, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen and Conrad Ricamora.
However, costume designer Patricia Field was replaced by her former associate Molly Rogers for the second time after HBO Max’s SATC continuation And Just Like That.
It appears to be a loose adaptation of Weisberger’s 2013 novel Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns as that book centered on a successful aspirational wedding magazine, The Plunge, which Priestly wanted to acquire for her own publishing company.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 will be released in US/UK theaters on May 1.
