Fans of gripping British crime dramas have something to celebrate as Ellis makes its long-awaited return tonight with its second season. After the success of its debut run, the series quickly gained a passionate following, with many viewers praising it as the “best detective drama since” Vera thanks to its layered mysteries and unexpected twists.
The drama, which airs on Channel 5, follows the formidable DCI Ellis, played by acclaimed actress Sharon D Clarke, and her trusted partner DS Harper, portrayed by Andrew Gower. Together, the pair are sent to investigate complicated and often failing cases across communities in the north of England.
The first season, which premiered in late 2024, impressed viewers with its tense storytelling and emotionally charged cases. Each episode placed Ellis and Harper in a new location, forcing them to uncover secrets buried deep within seemingly quiet towns. Those mysteries, packed with surprise turns and moral dilemmas, quickly made the show a standout among modern detective dramas.
Season two looks set to raise the stakes even further. According to Clarke, the new run will deliver “more joy, more twists, more turns, more cases and more beautiful locations.” She also hinted that audiences should expect plenty of misleading clues and dramatic reveals designed to keep viewers guessing until the final moments.
The new season will see the detectives tackling an array of unsettling cases. One investigation begins in a rural village after the suspicious death of a respected community leader exposes long-held resentments. Another case unfolds near an industrial stone works where the death of a young woman reveals a hidden network of coercion and exploitation. With each case, the detectives must dig deeper into fractured communities and dangerous secrets.
For Gower, bringing these stories to life comes with its own challenges. The actor revealed that mastering authentic police terminology and the intense filming schedule can be demanding, but the team is determined to make the series feel as realistic and cinematic as possible.
He also believes the show’s success lies in the enduring popularity of detective dramas in the UK. Audiences, he says, are drawn to the depth of the characters and the powerful partnership between Ellis and Harper. Combined with striking filming locations and gripping guest performances, the series aims to deliver stories that feel both dramatic and emotionally resonant.
With its mix of clever mysteries, atmospheric settings, and strong performances, Ellis is hoping to capture the same excitement that surrounded its first season. If the cast’s promises are anything to go by, viewers can expect a second season packed with tense investigations, shocking revelations, and episodes that could leave fans talking long after the credits roll.
Season 2 of Ellis premieres March 10 at 9pm on Channel 5.
