A father and daughter are facing prison after a jury found they dumped a mother’s body in a canal after she was murdered.

John Anslow, 65, subjected Chereiss Bailey, 36, to a traumatic assault at his home in West Bromwich last September.

He then recruited his daughter Hayley-Marie Ferguson, 42, who helped tie her body to a paving slab with washing line cord then dumped her in the canal where she was found nearly two weeks later.

A three-week trial in Birmingham was told Chereiss met Anslow on Great Bridge Street and was seen on CCTV going into Anslow’s home on September 27.

The following day, Anslow cancelled visits from his community carers and instead called his daughter to come and help him.

A jury at Birmingham Crown Court was told Ferguson loaded some paving slabs into a taxi, telling the driver she was helping him with some gardening.

Later that evening, Ferguson went to a Peaky Blinders-themed event before returning to her dad’s house in the early hours of September 29.

Footage shows Anslow pushing Chereiss’s body in his distinctive wheelchair, which has bright orange wheels. The father and daughter then travelled home separately, Anslow in his wheelchair.

Police received a tip-off on October 4 that a woman had been ‘disposed of’ in the canal, known locally as Eight Locks. Three days later her body was discovered in the water near Ryders Green Road, the trial was told.

Following the tip-off, police swiftly identified Ferguson in their initial enquiries and went to her home in Heronville Road where they discovered blood-stained clothing in a wheelie-bin, leading to Ferguson’s arrest.

While in custody, she made ‘significant comments’ that implicated her dad, so he was also arrested.

Anslow has now been convicted of murder, and preventing a lawful and decent burial. Ferguson was found guilty of assisting an offender and prevention of a lawful burial.

Chereiss’s family described her as a ‘much-loved daughter, sister, mother, auntie, granddaughter and friend.’

They said: ‘She had a huge personality, a beautiful heart and a way of making her presence known wherever she went. Life was never quiet when Chereiss was around, and we would give absolutely anything to have that noise back.

Chereiss Bailey was described by police as being a vulnerable mum (Picture: SWNS/WMP)

‘Most heartbreaking of all, her little boy has been robbed of growing up with his mum beside him. We will make sure he grows up knowing exactly who she was, how much she adored him and how fiercely she was loved.’

Detective Inspector Michelle Cordell said investigators may never know what motivated Anslow.

She said: ‘Chereiss was a vulnerable young woman with her whole life ahead of her. It is difficult to comprehend the abhorrent actions of John Anslow and his daughter, Hayley Ferguson, in late September last year.

‘Anslow had presented himself as a vulnerable wheelchair user with extremely limited mobility. He was in fact a violent predator. His daughter Hayley had also presented as having limited mobility, evidence of which proves otherwise.’

The case was adjourned for sentencing.
