Monarch: Legacy of Monsters star Kurt Russell, who plays Lee Shaw, addresses whether he’d return for season 2. The Monsterverse series primarily follows the Randa family in 2015, when their family’s history leads them to the shadowy organization Monarch. Part of the series also takes place in the 1950s and sees a younger Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell), Keiko (Mari Yamamoto), and Bill Randa (Anders Holm) founding Monarch. The series recently wrapped up season 1, but its cliffhanger ending has left viewers curious if another is on the way.

In an interview with The Wrap, Russell addressed the possibility of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 and whether he would return if it were greenlit. Russell indicated he is open to discussing his return if those in charge move ahead with season 2, but the show’s continuation isn’t in his hands. Still, even if a season 2 isn’t on the horizon, Russell reiterated how pleased he was with the show’s final shot. Check out his statement below:

Don’t know. That’s up to them and we’ll do it… Whatever. We’ll talk about it if they want to talk about it. But the thing that’s great is that it just got to a place where the last shot was… That’s as good as it gets in terms of last image impact.

What Would Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 Look Like?

It’s quite interesting that Russell showed an openness to returning, given that Shaw was the sole character whose fate was left unknown in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ season 1 finale. Still, given that he returned after being thought deceased once before, Shaw’s presence in a potential season 2 remains possible. However, even if he doesn’t physically return, season 2 would have plenty of other plot points and characters to work with besides the mystery of his fate.

After all, the finale of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 1 included a two-year time jump. Hence, there is much to catch up on regarding what happened during those two years outside the Hollow Earth, as well as the need to see how Cate Randa (Anna Sawai), May (Kiersey Clemons), and Keiko adjust to the lost time. Additionally, APEX’s and Monarch’s alliance leaves many questions about the former’s intentions and the connotations of Monarch working with its enemy.

Meanwhile, the reveal that Apex and Monarch are on Skull Island teases that Kong could be the major focus of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, rather than Godzilla. Although season 2 isn’t officially greenlit, showrunner Chris Black indicated he was optimistic about the show being renewed. In addition to Russell, Yamamoto and Clemons have also discussed the show and their characters’ futures with optimism. As Russell indicated, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters had a very impactful and surprising ending, which opened up numerous possibilities for another season and might serve the show well in getting it renewed.
