Queensland Police have issued a heartbreaking update following a horrific crash in Banya on the Sunshine Coast that left two little girls critically injured and a family shattered. The tragedy occurred on December 23, 2025, when a car carrying the 6-year-old and 8-year-old sisters veered off the road on Banya Drive, colliding with a tree in the early evening. The girls were rushed to Sunshine Coast University Hospital, where both remain in critical condition in the ICU, fighting for their lives after sustaining severe head and internal injuries. The driver, the girls’ 34-year-old mother, was treated for minor injuries and released; she is now assisting police with their investigation.

The emotional weight of the crash deepened when the girls’ grandmother, in a tearful statement released through authorities, shared the last words she believes were spoken to the younger child: “Goodbye, my beautiful angel. You will always be loved.” The phrase, reportedly whispered by the mother as paramedics arrived, has become a haunting echo of the family’s grief. “She’s clinging to hope, but the reality is crushing,” a family friend told Brisbane Times. “Two innocent little girls—how does this happen?”
Police are investigating the cause, with preliminary reports suggesting speed and possible distraction. The stretch of Banya Drive is known for sharp curves and high speeds, prompting renewed calls for safety upgrades. “This could have ended very differently,” Inspector Mark Reynolds said. “We urge drivers to slow down—lives depend on it.”
The crash has devastated the tight-knit Banya community, where the girls were known for their bright personalities. A GoFundMe launched by neighbors raised over A$150,000 in 48 hours for medical costs and family support. Local school held a minute’s silence, with students tying ribbons to fences in solidarity.
