Apple TV+ has officially renewed Down Cemetery Road for a second season, just two days after the Season 1 finale aired on December 10, 2025, confirming that the unlikely duo of private investigator Zoë Boehm (Emma Thompson) and determined neighbor Sarah Trafford (Ruth Wilson) will return for more acerbic wit and nerve-racking intrigue. The series, adapted from Mick Herron’s 2003 novel of the same name—the first in his “Zoë Boehm” book series—premiered on October 29, 2025, with weekly episodes, earning a Certified Fresh 79% on Rotten Tomatoes and widespread acclaim as “one of the best thrillers of the decade” for its twisty plot, impeccable performances, and delectable blend of dark comedy and tension.

Season 1 followed Sarah (Wilson) obsessively searching for a missing neighbor girl after a house explosion, teaming up with PI Zoë (Thompson) to uncover a conspiracy involving the presumed dead still living and the living dying. The finale left viewers on edge with jaw-dropping surprises, deaths, and unresolved threads like C (Darren Boyd) entering shady business and Hamza (Adeel Akhtar) surviving his missions. Apple TV announced the renewal on December 12, 2025, with executive producer and star Thompson stating: “I’m so thrilled that Down Cemetery Road has been enjoyed enough to warrant a second season.”
Season 2 reunites Thompson and Wilson as Zoë and Sarah, navigating “the glamorous but ruthless world of black market antiquities” after a woman falls in front of a train. While Wilson’s Sarah isn’t in all Herron’s novels, Apple confirms her return alongside Thompson. Lead director for Season 2 is Börkur Sigþórsson (Insomnia), with writer Morwenna Banks (Funny Woman) returning. Producers 60Forty Films (Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Tom Nash) and Herron exec produce.
The Season 1 cast—Adeel Akhtar, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Tom Goodman-Hill, Darren Boyd, Tom Riley, Adam Godley, Sinead Matthews, Ken Nwosu, Fehinti Balogun, Aiysha Hart—may see returns, though Godley’s Joe died early. Apple’s quick renewal mirrors Slow Horses success, another Herron adaptation.
No release date yet—Season 1 took 18 months from announcement (April 2024) to premiere (October 2025), suggesting late 2027 for Season 2. Creative director Jay Hunt: “Audiences fell in love with Zoë and Sarah’s acerbic wit.”
Season 1’s “twisty, addictive” ride—praised for Thompson’s flinty turn and Wilson’s precision—sets up more. Herron hinted at potential: “If a sequel is made, it would include both in their dynamic.”
Down Cemetery Road Season 2 promises darker mysteries. Stream Season 1 on Apple TV+ now.
