November 24, 2025 – It was a night to remember: a glittering, champagne-soaked celebration of all things fabulous – or in this case, all things fantastically flawed. On Christmas Day, BBC One delivered the gift fans of the Motherland universe had been clamouring for since the original series wrapped in 2021: Amandaland, a one-off festive special starring Lucy Punch as the hapless Amanda Lamb and Jennifer Saunders as her imperious mother Felicity. The 60-minute extravaganza, written by the original team of Sharon Horgan, Barunka O’Shaughnessy, Helen Serafinowicz, and Holly Walsh, reprised the iconic duo’s dynamic with a holiday twist, bringing back the chaotic energy of middle-class parenting woes amid tinsel and turkey. What unfolded was a dazzling, unforgettable experience that had viewers cheering from start to finish, blending nostalgia with fresh absurdity to remind us why these characters are TV legends: flawed, funny, and fiercely relatable.

The special picks up where Motherland left off, with Amanda (Punch), the glamorous yet perpetually overwhelmed Chiswick mum, now “downsized” to the trendy (but terrifying) South Harlesden enclave known as SoHa. Forced to host a “perfect” Christmas after her divorce, Amanda ropes in her mother Felicity (Saunders, in a pitch-perfect return to her Absolutely Fabulous roots as a boozy aristocrat trapped in a tracksuit) for backup. What ensues is pure comedic anarchy: Felicity’s disastrous attempt at a turkey crown (“Darling, it’s not a hat!”), Amanda’s eco-anxious panic over “sustainable wrapping paper,” and a parade of familiar faces crashing the party with escalating mishaps. Eve Myles returns as the perpetually exhausted Bobbie, now Amanda’s reluctant SoHa flatmate, while Diane Morgan’s Liz – the queen of passive-aggression – arrives with her “organic” gifts that include a live chicken. Newcomer Alex Jennings plays Felicity’s long-lost “beau,” a posh widower whose advances lead to a wine-fueled singalong of “Fairytale of New York” that devolves into a full-on food fight.
The streets of SoHa shimmer with fairy lights, laughter echoes from cramped terraced houses, and the spirit of Motherland is alive in every absurd, relatable moment. Joined by a host of special guests – including a cameo from Catherine Tate as a deranged carol singer – chaos, high fashion (or Felicity’s “designer” Christmas jumper from 1987), and razor-sharp wit collide to create a dazzling experience that’s equal parts holiday warmth and holiday havoc. Old friendships are rekindled (Bobbie and Amanda bonding over midnight Prosecco confessions), new sparks ignite (a flirtation between Liz’s husband Kevin and the chicken), and every champagne-soaked mishap reminds viewers why these women are legends: they’re us, amplified – flawed, fierce, and fabulous in their failures.

Blending nostalgia with fresh energy, Amandaland is a sparkling gift for long-time fans and newcomers alike, proof that some comedies never fade; they simply evolve, swapping wine nights for wreath wars and proving that the best holidays are the ones where everything goes gloriously wrong. As Felicity toasts the camera with a sloshing glass: “To family – may they always be just close enough to annoy you!” BBC One has delivered Christmas magic – messy, merry, and utterly unforgettable. Stream it on iPlayer now, darling. You’ll never laugh harder at a ruined pudding.
