Film-lovers simply must add this classic watch to their list, with fans praising it decades after its release. Robert De Niro is an actor renowned for his iconic performances, and this film is no exception. Deer Hunter (1978) follows the story of Michael (Robert De Niro), Nick (Christopher Walken) and Steven (John Savage), who are lifelong friends. The three characters are from a working-class Pennsylvania steel town, preparing to ship out overseas following Steven’s elaborate wedding and one final group hunting trip.

In Vietnam, their dreams of military honour are quickly shattered by the inhumanities of war; even those who survive are haunted by the experience, as is Nick’s hometown sweetheart, Linda (Meryl Streep). CBR has listed the film as one of the top 10 greatest war movies people often forget. It says: “The Deer Hunter’s use of violence is brutal, but overall, it elevates the plot’s themes of trauma, identity and fate.

“Additionally, as the story showcases the meaningless and cruel nature of war, audiences become invested in how the protagonists can retain some sense of humanity given the brutal elements that each soldier had to face.”

The film has racked up an impressive 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes with film-lovers singing its praises in their reviews.

A fan of the film on Rotten Tomatoes wrote: “A masterpiece. A film that truly portrays what friendship is all about. De Niro at his very best!”
