The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s attorney told ‘Variety’ that the assertion “seems calculated to play into the misogynistic characterization of her bossing her husband around”

Prince Harry is rejecting a claim about his and Meghan Markle’s working dynamic in a new report.

On March 17, Variety published a report examining the couple’s Hollywood ventures and evolving relationship with Netflix, questioning where things stand after their 2020 deal with the streamer. The report comes shortly after news broke that Meghan’s lifestyle brand, As ever — which was developed in partnership with Netflix — is moving forward independently, with the streamer no longer involved.

The piece included a claim about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s interactions in meetings, with sources saying that in both virtual and in-person conversations with partners, Meghan “tends to talk over or recast Prince Harry’s thoughts, sometimes while he is mid-sentence (usually preceded by a touch to the arm or thigh).”

In a letter to Variety, the couple’s attorney, Michael J. Kump, pushed back on that characterization, saying it “seems calculated to play into the misogynistic characterization of her bossing her husband around.”

Prince Harry also called the claim “categorically false,” according to Variety — a rare instance of the Duke of Sussex publicly addressing media claims.

PEOPLE has reached out to Netflix for comment. A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had no further comment.

The outlet further alleged that Meghan had an unconventional approach to providing feedback in meetings, with sources claiming she would at times “disappear” for extended periods during Zoom calls, and that teams were later told she had stepped away after taking offense to something that was said.

In response, Variety reported that the couple’s attorney strongly disputed that characterization, emphasizing that Meghan “works from home, is the mother of young children aged 4 and 6, and often encounters (as many parents who work from home do) children who enter the space unexpectedly during a meeting.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are parents to a 6-year-old son, Prince Archie, and a 4-year-old daughter, Princess Lilibet.

“Independent of being a parent who works from home, Meghan is also conscious of shielding her team from the distraction of children,” Kump continued. “Nearly all professionals can attest to needing to turn off the audio or camera during a virtual meeting at some point during many hours of virtual business calls.”

The Variety article also suggested that the relationship between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and Netflix has cooled, though a spokesperson for the streamer told the outlet it is “absolutely inaccurate” that CEO Ted Sarandos and Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria have lost faith in the couple.

Kump added that the couple remains friendly with Sarandos and his wife, Nicole Avant, and are in regular contact, including visits to their Montecito home.

News broke in August 2025 that Prince Harry and Meghan were extending their creative partnership with Netflix through their Archewell Productions company, unveiling a multi-year, first-look deal for film and television projects.

The update followed wide reports in the summer of 2025 that the couple’s reported $100 million deal with Netflix would not be renewed when it expired that September. At the time, a Hollywood insider told PEOPLE that the move reflected a broader shift in Netflix’s business strategy, as the streamer moved away from multi-project agreements, similarly striking a first-look deal with former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground production company.

Harry and Meghan produced several documentaries for Netflix since they struck their initial ideal in 2020 after stepping back from their royal roles in the U.K. that year. Their 2022 docuseries Harry & Meghan, where they told their side of the story about their departure from royal life, was released in two parts in December 2024 and became the streamer’s most-watched documentary debut ever.

To date, Prince Harry and Meghan have produced the projects Live to Lead (2022), Heart of Invictus (2023) and Polo (2024) for Netflix, as well as her lifestyle series, With Love, Meghan, featuring two seasons and a holiday special, and Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within, both in 2025.
