Prince Harry is said to have got a “slap in the face” as King Charles revoked his offer for him to stay at Buckingham Palace this week, a royal author has said. The 41-year-old arrived in the UK earlier this week, without his wife and two children in tow.
The Duke of Sussex was set to travel alongside Meghan Markle and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, before his request for police protection was denied. Harry then travelled on his own, with the King’s offer for him to stay at Buckingham Palace later withdrawn after his response came too late.
As a result of the late response, arrangements for Harry to stay at Buckingham Palace could not be made.
Speaking to withdrawal, and how the King made the “right decision”, royal author Tom Bower exclusively told the Daily Express: “I think the King offered him Buckingham Palace. And then withdrawing the offer was a huge slap in the face for Harry.
“The King made the right decision because if he had lost the case, Harry would have gone back to Buckingham Palace, which would have tarnished the monarchy even more. It’s very important to distance themselves from Harry.”
He added: “The man is poison for the monarchy. I think all the damage he and Meghan have done over the last five years has been more damage, and the monarchy’s popularity has fallen.
“It needs to rebuild its popularity and rebuild its respect for people. And Harry’s presence in Britain just undermines that effort.”

Harry’s current visit to the UK will see him undertake a series of engagements for the Invictus Games.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s spokesperson recently told PEOPLE that Harry was “really happy” to be back in the UK. They said: “He’s really happy to be back in the UK and really looking forward to the week’s engagements.”
Harry will attend the one-year countdown event for the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham this Friday, July 10.
