Jane Austen’s iconic masterpiece—hailed as a gripping and timeless cultural icon—follows sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood in Georgian-era England. Left destitute after the sudden death of their father and forced to leave their family estate, the sisters must navigate the complexities of high society to find financial security and potential suitors.

The trailer offers a glimpse into their journey through love, heartbreak, and the pursuit of happiness. While the logical Elinor finds herself drawn to the charming and dutiful Edward Ferrars, the impulsive Marianne is instantly smitten with John Willoughby after he rescues her from a sudden downpour of rain.

With the film backed by the powerhouse producers behind the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightley and 2020’s Emma led by Anya Taylor-Joy, fans can rest assured that Austen’s beloved text is in exceptionally good hands.

✨ What to expect from this modern take on a classic

The film is billed as an irresistible and fresh new take on Jane Austen’s iconic novel. It promises to be a charming, witty, and deeply relatable story of romance and sisterhood.

In an interview with Vogue, director Georgia Oakley emphasized her desire to create a story centered on real human beings. She explained that she is a bit tired of the over-fetishization of that time period—the ideal that everyone spent seven hours doing their hair and makeup, and everything was always pristine. The director aims to bring a much more authentic, grounded, and vivid perspective to the screen.

Sense and Sensibility arrives in cinemas on September 25, 2026.

Austen’s 1811 masterpiece has been adapted for the screen several times over the years. Arguably, the most beloved version remains Ang Lee’s 1995 Oscar-winning film, which starred Emma Thompson as Elinor and Kate Winslet as Marianne. In 2008, Andrew Davies also adapted the novel into a highly acclaimed three-part BBC series.
