The Okanogan County Coroner in Washington said Matt was likely killed by the bullet and then fell into the river where his body was taken beneath the water.

He was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of his death, the report added.

Matt was found on Sunday by a rescue team after his body appeared downstream from his last known location.

A witness had reported seeing a man “face down in the water drifting away in the current” on May 27 to the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office.

The Brown family quickly launched a search party after fearing the body could be Matt’s after he went missing on the same day.

Matt’s girlfriend Jamie and his younger brother Noah were both a major part of the search when his body was discovered.

His body will now be released back to his family for final arrangements including his funeral.

Matt was among the original stars of Discovery Channel’s hit reality series Alaskan Bush People.

It followed the Brown family‘s unconventional off-grid lifestyle in the Alaskan wilderness.

The series ran for 14 seasons and Matt featured in almost 80 episodes before it ended in 2022.

Reports have previously suggested communication between Matt and several family members had broken down.

The reality star’s younger brother Bear Brown was the first to confirm Matt’s death on Saturday evening.

He took to Instagram to say he had “some really bad news” and had been told that Matt “took his own life”.

Bear also shared in his video that Matt had been struggling with alcohol and drug addiction among “other issues” that he’d kept private from the public in recent years.

A statement on behalf of the family was shared on Sunday paying tribute to Matt.

It read: “It is with broken hearts that we share the loss of our beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, Matthew Brown.

“To millions of viewers, Matt was known as one of the original stars of Alaskan Bush People. To us, he was so much more.”

“Matt was intelligent, curious, creative, and endlessly fascinated by the world around him. He was a gifted outdoorsman, fisherman, boatman, artist, and lifelong learner.

“He loved adventure, nature, and discovering new things. Matt had an extraordinary mind.

“Those who truly knew Matt knew his heart. He was compassionate, generous with his time, and deeply wanted to help others.”
