‘Future cult classic’ rom-com with A-list stars coming to Netflix(Image: FOCUS FEATURES)
Netflix is adding a quirky romantic crime caper that some fans claim has the makings of a future cult classic.
While the film proved divisive after its release in 2024, with a 37 percent Rotten Tomatoes audience score and 64 percent from critics, it has built up a passionate following over the last two years.
Directed by one half of one of the most iconic filmmaker pairings of all time, Ethan Coen, known for writing and directing films with his brother, Joel, and co-written with Tricia Cooke, Drive-Away Dolls boasts an incredible cast of A-list talent.
Starring Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan as two lesbian best friends, spirited Jamie and uptight Marian, the pair embark on an unconventional road trip to Tallahassee that descends into chaos when they cross paths with a group of criminals on a rather raunchy mission.
In addition to the two leads, the film also includes appearances from major names such as Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Matt Damon, and even pop star Miley Cyrus in an uncredited cameo.

Although it didn’t set the box office on fire and has received a lukewarm reception from most audiences, a strong contingent of fans are convinced it deserves more love.
Screen Rant called it “underrated” and claimed it’s “one of the funniest comedies of 2024”.
“It could be just a matter of time before it finds its audience and becomes a cult classic,” they added.
A 10/10 IMDb review agreed with the assessment, writing: “This film has the making of a cult movie like Pulp Fiction.

“An edgy action/suspense/satire movie with great humorous moments and engaging dialogue. Go see it, you won’t regret you did!”
The film fan went on to compare Drive-Away Dolls to Coen Brothers films like The Big Lebowski and Fargo, as well as Thelma and Louise and Everything Everywhere All At Once, so lovers of those titles should definitely take note.
Another enthusiast went one step further, calling it the “Best Comedy of the At Least Last 10 Years” in their 10/10 write-up.
“Given the preview made this movie look like utter garbage, I was pleasantly surprised at how good this was,” they continued.

“This was not what I expected at all, and this is the first movie that had me laughing beginning to end since 2014. I’ve literally been making all my friends go watch this movie, because it is that good. I don’t understand why ratings are so low.”
And the raves continued on Letterboxd, where one user said: “Drive-Away Dolls is a misunderstood masterpiece that uses elements of the noir genre, mixes them with social satire, and sets it in 1999 to paint the most ridiculous portrait possible of lesbian culture from that era (not complaining, it’s amazing), and which, for some reason, still seems vaguely relevant today.”
While a final five-star review said: “Can’t lie, this is an instant favourite and immediately a top 3 Coen Brother(s) movie for me. Had me cheesing and laughing and even crying at all moments.”
