The former sovereign has experienced several health concerns in recent times
Denmark’s former monarch, Queen Margrethe, has been admitted to the hospital, according to a royal court spokesperson.
The 86-year-old is receiving treatment for angina at Copenhagen’s Rigshospitalet, with officials describing her as “tired” but in “good spirits”.
Medical staff will keep the former queen under observation throughout the weekend whilst conducting additional examinations, the statement confirmed.
Margrethe stepped down from the Danish throne in January 2024 following more than five decades as head of state, handing the crown to her eldest son, who now reigns as King Frederik.

Her reign of 52 years saw the Danish monarch become widely beloved for her efforts to gently modernise the institution whilst maintaining its traditions.
The former sovereign has experienced several health concerns in recent times.
Last year, she was taken to the same Copenhagen hospital for what palace officials described as precautionary observation following an undisclosed illness.

During that May 2025 admission, Margrethe spent two days at Rigshospitalet before being discharged and returning to her residence at Fredensborg Palace.
Despite these health challenges, the former queen has maintained an active schedule of royal engagements since stepping back from her official duties.
Her most recent public appearance came at Fredensborg Palace, where the royal family gathered for a concert performed by the Royal Life Guards Music Corps to mark her 86th birthday.
The celebration saw Margrethe joined by King Frederik, Queen Mary, and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece.
During the performance, the former monarch’s dachshund Tilia wandered among the assembled royals, prompting Queen Mary to briefly reach down and pet the dog.
Margrethe appeared to disapprove of the timing, reportedly telling her daughter-in-law: “Jeg tror ikke det er den rette tid til det” — meaning “I don’t think now is the correct time for that.”
