Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry in May 2018 was seen as the ultimate royal fairytale. But less than two years later, the couple announced their decision to step back from working royal life to become “financially independent”.

When she married into the royal family, the Duchess of Sussex left her old life behind. She gave up her acting career, deleted her social media accounts and began taking on the responsibility of being a senior working royal. But it seems it wasn’t long before issues began to emerge.

According to a royal author, the late Prince Philip struggled to understand why Meghan couldn’t just “support her husband and support the monarchy” rather than “wanting to have her voice”.

The late Duke of Edinburgh made the ultimate sacrifice after marrying Queen Elizabeth II. The couple tied the knot in 1947, years before Elizabeth became monarch.

After Elizabeth became queen upon the death of her father King George VI in February 1952, Prince Philip gave up his promising naval career to devote his life to royal duty and support his wife in her role.

He just cannot understand why she couldn’t support Harry.

Up until his death in 2021, Philip remained a strong support for Queen Elizabeth II for nearly seven decades. He became the longest-serving royal consort in British history.

Speaking in 2020, royal author Ingrid Seward shared her thoughts on what Philip may have felt about Meghan marrying into the royal family.

She told Sky News at the time: “I think he’s very, very disappointed because I think he feels he gave up his naval career in order to stand by the queen and help the monarchy.

“And why can’t Meghan just give up her acting career, support her husband and support the monarchy? He just cannot understand why she couldn’t support Harry and help him rather than wanting to have her voice.”

Months after their exit from royal duties, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did a sit-down tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The explosive interview aired in March 2021, just weeks before Prince Philip’s death in that April. Philip had been admitted to hospital in February 2021 after becoming unwell. At the time, he was treated for an infection and also underwent a heart procedure on a pre-existing condition.

All the while, Harry and Meghan’s tell-all interview with Oprah was imminent.

Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview

Harry and Meghan had made several accusations in the interview. Shockingly, they claimed that there had been “concerns and conversations” shared by a family member about “how dark” their son Archie’s skin would be when he was born.

Prince Harry even claimed that he had been cut off financially from his family in the “first quarter” of 2020.

He also expressed that King Charles and Prince William were “trapped within the system” of the royal family and shared his compassion for that.

How the palace responded to the Oprah allegations

At the time, the palace released a statement expressing Queen Elizabeth II’s views on the interview. It read: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved family members.”

Meanwhile, in his new book Queen Elizabeth II: A personal History, author Hugo Vickers claims the queen felt “deeply hurt by her grandson’s attacks”.

Following the Oprah interview, she allegedly “refused to answer his phone calls unless there was a witness who could record what was said”.

According to Vickers, when Harry would call the queen, she would “ask her lady-in-waiting to be with her”. She would reportedly only limit herself to “monosyllabic conversations made up only of ‘yes’ and ‘no.’”
