Fans of Yellowstone might not be familiar with one of Kelly Reilly’s earliest roles in a trilogy of lesser-known romantic comedies.

The British actress has gained international recognition for her portrayal of Beth Dutton in the popular Western drama featuring Kevin Costner, aired on Paramount+.

Reilly is set to reprise her role alongside Cole Hauser, who plays Beth’s cowboy spouse Rip Wheeler, in the forthcoming spin-off, The Dutton Ranch, expected to premiere later this year.

Beyond the Yellowstone series, she’s also delving into a darker character in the upcoming Sky detective thriller, Under Salt Marsh, set in the fictional Welsh town of Morfa Halen and filmed entirely in Wales.

Ahead of her eagerly awaited return to our screens, fans have been revisiting Reilly’s award-winning performance in The Spanish Apartment trilogy, which enjoys a dedicated cult following in France, reports the Express.

In all three films, Reilly embodies Wendy, a British student living in a Barcelona flatshare with Xavier (played by Romain Duris), a French student, and a diverse group of other students. A romance eventually blossoms between Wendy and Xavier.

All three films were directed by Cédric Klapisch, with the first instalment released in 2002, delving into the students’ lives and friendships in Barcelona. The sequel, Russian Dolls (2005), fast-forwards five years to a reunion at the wedding of Wendy’s brother, William (Kevin Bishop).

The 2013 sequel, Chinese Puzzle, follows the couple post-breakup, with Xavier now in his 40s and grappling with raising their two children.

Featuring the renowned Amelie actress Audrey Tautou, the trilogy is sadly hard to find on streaming platforms but is definitely worth the effort for those interested in delving into Reilly’s career beyond Yellowstone.

However, she recently made a comeback to the series in 2023 in Klapisch’s Prime Video sequel, Greek Salad. This time, Reilly and Duris play smaller roles as the eight-part drama focuses on Wendy and Xavier’s children, Tom (Alyosha Schneider) and Mia (Megan Northam).

Upon its release, the star took to Instagram to honour the director and cast. Alongside a selfie with the director, she penned: “20 years ago I got to work on a film called L’auberge Espagnole.

“5 years later we all returned for Les Poupees Russes. 10 years ago for Casse tete Chinois. Last year we came back for Salad Grecque just out on Amazon Prime.

“How wonderful to work with you @cedklap over all these years,” she continued. “And to the actors I have been getting older with, what a total joy it’s been!

While Reilly was already a well-known theatre and TV actress, these films significantly boosted her international recognition, with her performance in the second film earning her a César Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Reilly also bagged the Chopard Award at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival, cementing her status as an actress to keep an eye on, more than a decade before she landed her role as Beth in Yellowstone.
