A dark and bloody sequence of events has sent shockwaves through the Mississippi community this past week, as three brothers from the same family were taken into custody following a series of grave criminal acts that have placed local law enforcement on high alert.

Tragedy at the Home of an Elderly Couple

The chain of events began around midday on June 3, when the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office received reports that an elderly couple in Mendenhall had lost contact with their family. When deputies arrived at the home of 74-year-old Billy Blair and his 71-year-old wife, 71-year-old Virginia Carol Blair, at approximately 12:24 p.m., they were met with a dangerous and harrowing situation.

According to official reports, the primary suspect in this case is 17-year-old Cordarius Hobbs. He is accused of breaking into the couple’s home and causing their tragic deaths. Cordarius currently faces a long list of severe charges, including two counts of capital murder, one count of burglary, and multiple counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and aggravated assault against persons over the age of 65.

Horrific Shootout on the Highway

Less than a week after the aforementioned tragedy, fear intensified when two of Cordarius’s brothers, Cortavious and Cortavion Hobbs, became involved in a violent confrontation with the police.

On June 8, Deputy Yates Rodney of the Covington County Sheriff’s Office signaled for the brothers to pull over due to a seat belt violation. What initially appeared to be a routine traffic stop took a sinister turn. Covington County Chief Deputy Sheriff Ricky Lott recounted the suspects’ initial demeanor to Fox News Digital, stating they were “cordial, friendly and light-hearted.”

However, the atmosphere shifted rapidly when Deputy Rodney discovered marijuana in the vehicle. According to Lott, the discovery of a blunt inside the car caused the situation to escalate quickly. A high-speed chase ensued for several miles, concluding when the suspects’ vehicle became stuck in the mud. In the ensuing shootout, Deputy Rodney was struck by gunfire.

The Aftermath of a Crime Spree

The consequences of the shootout have been devastating. The bullet did not only strike the deputy in the shoulder but also caused severe damage to his lungs and spine. Lott painfully shared the medical prognosis given to Deputy Rodney, noting that the doctor stated he “will never walk again.”

It is particularly heartbreaking to note that Deputy Rodney had only been with the agency for approximately six months and had recently been married. A GoFundMe page has been established to support him as he faces a long and challenging road to recovery.

Currently, Cortavious and Cortavion have been charged with attempted capital murder and hindering prosecution. Additionally, Cortavion faces charges of felony fleeing. The Mississippi Department of Public Safety, through Media and Public Relations Specialist Bailey Martin, has confirmed the familial link between the three suspects. While details regarding the brothers’ juvenile criminal records remain undisclosed, the violent actions of all three brothers have sparked intense public outrage, marking this as one of the most shocking crime waves to hit Mississippi in recent memory.
