A young boy has narrowly escaped a shark attack on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, with his surfboard taking the impact of the encounter.

The 11-year-old was surfing at Dee Why Point when a shark lunged from the water and bit his board several times about 11.30am on Monday.

The boy was not injured.

The Dee Why local, who was surfing with his father, told Manly Observer he was knocked off his board and began yelling for help.

“I was on the board when the shark came up and bit it,” he said.

“I got knocked off the board.”

An older surfer helped him before his father paddled out to bring him safely to shore.

“I’m physically fine but I’m obviously rattled and the board has a chunk taken out of it and a couple of bite marks in it,” the boy said.

“I feel very lucky I got out of this situation unharmed and I also want to thank all the people who helped me.”

The beach has since been closed, with a Surf Life Saving NSW drone sent to monitor the area.

The incident came just one day after another shark attack in Sydney.

A 12-year-old boy was attacked after jumping off a rock into the water with two friends in Vaucluse about 4.20pm on Sunday.

The boy suffered severe injuries to both legs, causing significant blood loss, and reportedly lost consciousness.

He was rushed into an ambulance where he was given a blood transfusion and taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

The combination of brackish water at the beach, which is a mix of fresh and salty water due to recent rain in Sydney, as well as splashing in the water created a “perfect storm” for an attack, NSW Police Superintendent Joseph McNulty said.

He urged people to avoid swimming in the harbour in its current condition.
