David Muir opened his latest World News Tonight broadcast with a devastating update to a heartbreaking story that had previously moved viewers to tears.

The 51-year-old anchor began Tuesday’s program by announcing the passing of Black Sabbath legend Ozzy Osbourne at age 76, marking the second shocking celebrity death in consecutive days, before returning to cover the tragic drowning of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who perished in a Costa Rican accident at 54.

The beloved actor’s death, now officially confirmed by local authorities, became the focus of Muir’s solemn reporting as he delivered fresh developments to his audience.

“Now to dramatic new details at this hour on the terrible accident that took the life of Cosby Show actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, made famous of course, playing Theo Huxtable,” he addressed viewers directly.

“Tonight, we have now learned he and his eight-year-old daughter were both struggling in those strong currents,” he continued. “Volunteers frantically tried to save them.”

Officials confirmed they had “tried CPR” on the performer for 45 minutes before declaring him deceased, Muir revealed, reports the Mirror US.

Victor Queindo’s subsequent report provided additional information as he interviewed local authorities about the beach incident, with police explaining that surfers requiring rescue themselves had managed to bring the eight-year-old safely to shore.

He also revealed that the beach where the tragedy happened, Playa Grande, is notorious for its perilous rip currents, displaying a warning sign at the entrance that cautioned visitors in English about the drowning risk from the powerful currents.

The coverage also highlighted Warner’s dedication to his daughter, along with his choice to maintain his family’s privacy in recent years, offering only brief glimpses and references to them on social media. He had never publicly disclosed the identities of his wife and daughter, who survive him.
