After a three-year hiatus following the resounding success of its first season, the hit crime drama The Light in the Hall is officially returning to screens with its second season, titled Still Waters. The series previously garnered significant acclaim upon its debut on S4C in 2022 before captivating international audiences via Channel 4, where viewers were drawn into the tragic quest for answers led by BAFTA-winning actress Joanna Scanlan as a grieving mother.
An Investigation Within a “Valley” of Secrets In the new installment, the setting remains the fictional village of Llanemlyn. Under the direction of creator Regina Moriarty, this season shifts its focus to a reservoir explosion in 1995—an event that completely altered the fate of the village. The central figure of the second season is Caryl (played by Siân Reese-Williams), a trainee journalist striving for a breakthrough in her career. Her curiosity leads her into a journey to uncover the truth behind the death of activist Llyr Owen.
The plot begins to unravel when Rhys—Llyr’s cousin, who was convicted of the bombing—returns to town after serving a thirty-year sentence. According to the official synopsis: “Told across two timelines, the story begins in 1995, when activist Llyr Owen dies in a bombing and his cousin Rhys is jailed for the crime. Thirty years later, Rhys returns home to a community once again divided by protest. As trainee journalist Caryl becomes drawn into the story, her investigation begins to unravel hidden truths, exposing secrets that have shaped the town for decades, in a gripping drama of protest, guilt and generational reckoning”.
