The former Duke of York’s plaque has been hung since 1987

A plaque commemorating Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor remains on display despite a nearby one less than a mile away being removed.

The plaque, noting the former Earl of Inverness, stands outside a cafe referencing Andrew opening Dunbar’s Hospital following its restoration by the National Trust for Scotland.

 

The plaque, which has been on display since 1987, also mentions the former Duke of York’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson.

A five-minute drive down the road saw the Highland Council take the step in removing a commemorative plaque honouring Andrew from Inverness Town House, with the item now held in storage at the building.

The plaque marked the former prince’s 2018 visit to the city centre venue, where he attended celebrations for the completion of renovation works.

Council officials confirmed the removal took place on February 25, almost a week after Andrew’s arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

Residents’ opinions have been split following the removal of the plaque outside the town house, with one local saying: “It’s a part of history, I don’t agree with what has happened, but it’s history. If it needs to be taken down then put it in a museum.”

Other residents disagreed, as one stated: “It’s one thing that should definitely disappear from the city forever, never to be seen again.”

GB News has contacted the National Trust for Scotland about the plaque.

Andrew has been in exile since being booted out of Royal Lodge, last being seen upon his release from Aylsham police station.

He was visited at the start of the week by Lord Richard Benyon, who serves as Lord Chamberlain of the Royal Household.

Lord Benyon made an unannounced journey to Andrew at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate.

The senior Palace official, who took up the role in 2024 after succeeding former MI5 chief Lord Parker of Minsmere, remained at the property for approximately two hours before departing.

As the most senior figure within the Royal Household, Lord Benyon oversees roughly 1,200 staff members and acts as the primary liaison between the monarch and the House of Lords.

Given that any alteration to the line of succession necessitates an Act of Parliament, the meeting has sparked speculation that formal discussions may be underway regarding the former Duke of York’s removal from his current eighth position.

The contents of the discussions between Lord Benyon and Andrew have not been disclosed.

Buckingham Palace declined to comment when approached by GB News.

Andrew currently occupies the eighth spot in the succession order to the British throne, despite having been stripped of his royal titles.

The former prince was taken into custody on his birthday last month, spending 11 hours in police detention while officers searched his Norfolk residence.

King Charles has been present at his Norfolk estate since Friday, yet the brothers have not crossed paths during this period.
