The three-year-old son of a South Carolina woman who was allegedly fatally shot by her boyfriend heartbreakingly called out for her as blood “exploded” out of her body, according to prosecutors.

Jayvion Nyrek Rice, 19, is accused of gunning down his 21-year-old girlfriend, Skyy Ernestasjah Logan, during a domestic dispute at their Inman home on Tuesday. Deputies with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a property on Farm Creek road at around 9pm after Rice’s mother called 911 to  report an accidental shooting, WSPA reports.

Upon arrival, first responders found Skyy outside on the front porch of the home suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. She was rushed to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center but succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after 10pm.

Rice initially claimed the shooting was an accident, telling investigators that he was handling a firearm in the home when the gun accidentally fired, and a round struck Skyy. However, investigators soon noted that Rice’s statement was inconsistent with evidence from the scene.

Authorities began investigating the incident as a homicide. During their initial findings, investigators reportedly discovered that Rice and Skyy were in a romantic relationship and had been arguing at the time of the shooting.

Rice was arrested at around 1am on Wednesday, jail records show. He has been charged with one count each of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

The teenager made his first appearance in court later in the day on Wednesday. A judge informed rice that he faces a life sentence without the possibility of parole if convicted.

Prosecutors revealed additional details about the case during the hearing as they requested that Rice be held without bond until his trial. They indicated that at least part of the shooting was captured on camera.

“The victim is 21-year-old Skyy Logan,” Assistant Solicitor Anthony Leibert told the judge. “Her 3-year-old little boy was sitting on a couch after the shooting, calling his mother’s name. He doesn’t know yet, he’s never gonna see her again.

“She was shot one time in the neck and the chest area. On the video, there’s blood exploding out of her body before she collapses and dies,” Leibert continued.

The judge approved the prosecutors’ request and ordered Rice to be held in the Spartanburg County Detention Center without bond. The alleged killer is slated to make his next court appearance on April 16.
