Paul McCullagh Jr has sadly passed away
The boxing world is in mourning following the heartbreaking death of Paul McCullagh Junior, who was just 25 years old. Born in Belfast, McCullagh had built an impressive amateur career, clinching the Ulster Elite heavyweight title in 2019 and representing Ireland in an international bout against the Netherlands.
His professional record boasted two wins, with his last fight taking place in April 2021. Known as ‘The Irish Drago’, McCullagh fought for both the St. John Bosco club in West Belfast and his family’s own McCullagh’s ABC in Dunmurry.
He was the grandson of legendary Belfast boxing coach Paul McCullagh, a respected figure in the sport. His grandfather, who devoted many years to coaching at the Immaculata amateur club, passed away at the age of 72 in October 2018. Throughout his illustrious career, he trained boxing legends such as Barry McGuigan and Hugh Russell.
McCullagh’s father, also named Paul, is a professional referee and was himself a champion amateur boxer, according to the Irish Mirror, reports Belfast Live. The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) has expressed its deep sadness over the death of 25 year old boxer Paul McCullough Junior, stating: “IABA is saddened by the passing of boxer, 25 year old Paul McCullough Junior.
“A member of clubs including St. John Bosco Belfast and his family’s McCullagh’s ABC, Paul won his first title in 2012, and an Ulster Elite heavyweight title in 2019. In the same year Paul represented Ulster High Performance against New York and represented Ireland in a dual nations international against the Netherlands.
“Paul turned pro after his 2019 success, and recorded a number of wins. Paul’s grandfather and father were both champion amateur boxers, the latter boxing out of Immaculata BC. Paul’s grandfather was a highly regarded pro and amateur coach and his father is a pro referee. IABA extends deepest condolences to Paul’s family, club and loved ones.”
Aidan Walsh, a former amateur teammate of McCullagh, shared his sorrow: “RIP my big mate I’ll never forget our memories together.” Jonathan O’Brien, who trained McCullagh, also paid tribute: “Rest in peace my boy, loved you like my son. You’re in heaven with your grandad Paul.”
Belfast Boxers joined in the tributes, saying: “Heartbreaking way to start the year. Paul McCullagh Jnr has passed away after a short illness condolences to his family and friends especially at St John Bosco boxing club Belfast Rest in peace big man.”
