A grieving family is sharing the life and legacy of 16-year-old Terry Burrell Jr., known to loved ones as TJ, following a tragic double homicide in Hinds County that claimed the lives of two teenagers.

In an exclusive interview with 16 WAPT News, TJ’s family spoke publicly for the first time, offering a glimpse into who he was beyond the headlines.

Remembering Terry Burrell Jr.: Family speaks out after tragic double homicide

Katerrius Burrell reflected on cherished memories with his younger brother, recalling simple moments they shared

“He loves to go outside with me in the backyard and, you know, watch the sunrise come up,” Katerrius Burrell said.

Family members said TJ was much more than a victim. They describe him as a loving son, a devoted brother, and a young man rooted in faith.

“He was a follower of Christ. He was just a loving and kind brother to be around. He loves talking about the Bible. He loved playing basketball. Some of his goals were to go to the NBA and, you know, make our mom proud,” Katerrius Burrell said.

According to his family, TJ looked up to both of his parents — his father, Terry Burrell Sr., whom they describe as a strong presence in his life, and his mother, Andrea Burns Winford, whom he deeply wanted to make proud.

Authorities said TJ and another 16-year-old, Khloe Hudson, were found shot to death along South Springdale Road after being reported missing. Investigators confirmed that both teens suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones told the media that the case does not appear to be a random act of violence. Officials say the two teenagers attended Lanier Jr. Sr. High School and knew each other. The case is now being investigated as a double homicide.

Back at home, the weight of the loss continues to ripple through the Burrell family.

“Like, you see it on the news, you see it on social media, but you never actually think, oh, that’ll be my family, and it hurts, it hurts a lot of people at home. A lot of people,” Katerrius Burrell said.

The family said the tragedy is compounded by recent losses. Earlier this year, they lost TJ’s grandmother, Carolyn Renee Burns Dart, and last year her husband, Patrick Dart, after 31 years of marriage.

The Hinds County Sheriff’s Department said there is no new information on the case at this time. Those wishing to support the Burrell family can click on their GoFundMe.
