A 40-year-old man was attacked by an alligator after entering a swamp to flee a DWI investigation, the Louisiana State Police said.

The pursuit of a male suspect, later identified as Victor M. Rivas, began on June 7 after troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B received reports of a Toyota Supra driving recklessly on Interstate 10 near Bonnabel Boulevard in Jefferson Parish, according to a press release from the department.

The vehicle was also said to have struck a concrete barrier and sustained a tire blowout.

Troopers conducted a traffic stop after the Supra was observed traveling south on Interstate 310 in St. Charles Parish. As troopers spoke with Rivas, they said they observed signs of impairment, per the release.

During their DWI investigation, police allege that Rivas began fleeing on foot and jumped from the elevated portion of Interstate 310 into a nearby swamp, according to the press release.

With the help of deputies from the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, troopers searched for Rivas, who was later spotted walking along U.S. Highway 61.

“When law enforcement approached, he fled again into a swampy area, where he was attacked by an alligator and sustained injuries to both arms,” the press release alleges. “Despite his injuries, Rivas continued fleeing before being located and apprehended with the assistance of drone technology.”

Rivas was transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to a St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office news release. The alligator was not injured, per the release

As listed in the press release and confirmed by PEOPLE with the Louisiana State Police and jail records, Rivas was charged with operating a vehicle while impaired and resisting an officer.

Rivas also faces charges of hit-and-run and careless operation, the Louisiana State Police confirmed to PEOPLE.

“Impaired driving can lead to serious and unpredictable consequences. Motorists are urged to make responsible decisions, plan ahead, and always designate a sober driver,” the press release states. “Louisiana State Police appreciates the strong partnership and coordinated efforts of the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office in bringing this incident to a successful resolution.”
