The day Adam Varone departed, he left behind a priceless gift for the world: The tear-filled farewell of a 19-year-old student

An overwhelming sense of grief has descended upon the Aquinas College community and the residents of Western Australia’s Wheatbelt region following the tragic death of Adam Varone, a promising young man who had just graduated in 2024. What began as a routine weekend excursion on an off-road buggy took a devastating turn, culminating in a heartbreak that has left all who knew him in mourning.

A Freak Accident in the Remote Countryside

The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 PM last Saturday on a private property in Beermullah, located near the town of Gingin, northeast of Perth. At the time, 19-year-old Adam Varone was a passenger in an all-terrain buggy when the vehicle struck a kangaroo crossing its path. The force of the impact resulted in a catastrophic accident. Although emergency responders arrived swiftly and performed essential first-aid before airlifting him to Royal Perth Hospital, his injuries were too severe, and he tragically succumbed to them.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash miraculously escaped without physical injury. Meanwhile, Western Australian police have cordoned off the scene and launched a thorough investigation to determine the technical circumstances and the underlying factors that led to this sorrowful event.

Deep Mourning at Aquinas College

In the wake of this profound loss, the Aquinas College community has been plunged into sorrow. Principal Jen Knox, in an official statement released to students and staff on Tuesday, expressed her deep heartache:

“It is with deep sadness that I share the news that Aquinas College Class of 2024 student, Adam Varone, passed away … following a tragic all-terrain vehicle accident over the weekend,”

On behalf of the school, she extended heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Adam’s mother Nikki, father Frank, sister Leah, girlfriend Tatjana, extended family, classmates, friends and all members of the Aquinas community who knew and cared for him.”

To honor Adam’s memory, a Mass was held this past Sunday. The large turnout of teachers, classmates, and acquaintances served as a poignant testament to the love and affection people held for him. Principal Knox remarked with emotion:

“The large attendance was a reflection of the love, care and support that surrounds Adam and those closest to him during this profoundly difficult time.”

A Legacy of Kindness Amidst Lingering Pain

Compounding the tragedy is the fact that Adam Varone was a classmate of Nick Campo, another student who lost his life in a car crash in July 2024 in North Lake—an incident that served as a catalyst for major reforms to Western Australia’s driving laws. To witness history repeat itself is a heavy burden for the community to bear.

Though Adam’s life was cut short at just 19, his spirit of generosity will endure. Principal Knox revealed that the family has decided to donate his organs to help save others in need. She shared:

“Adam’s final gift will leave a lasting legacy through the lives he will help save”

In concluding her statement, the principal urged the school community to stand together:

“We thank all those who have kept Adam and his family in their prayers and ask that we continue to hold them close in our hearts, remaining united as a community in the days ahead,”

Adam Varone’s passing is not only an immeasurable loss for his family but also a heart-wrenching reminder of the fragility of life and the lasting human value he leaves behind.
