Police are searching for a man they say was behind the wheel when a car slammed into a tree with enough force to split the vehicle in half.

The man was driving along Point Cook Rd in Seabrook, Victoria about 1am on Tuesday morning when his 2011 Toyota Kluger “was left totally destroyed” after it skirted a roundabout, hit a gutter and smashed into a tree.

A Victoria Police spokesman said officers held “grave concerns for the welfare of the driver”, who is believed to be a young man.

“A thorough search of the vehicle and the immediate area surrounding the crash has failed to find the driver who police suspect would be injured. The Kluger is believed to have been stolen about five minutes prior to the crash in a carjacking at Laverton railway station,” police said.

“Protective service officers patrolling the area raised the alarm after a man reported he had been pulled from his vehicle by a male who then sped from the scene.”

Police are urging any witnesses or people with dashcam footage to call Crime Stoppers.
