“We are beckoning your spirit on onto us and home”: As heavy rains and flooding approach, the search for Ja’Derrius Minnieweather has become more urgent than ever

As the city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, braces for heavy rainfall and the threat of widespread flooding, the focus of the community and local authorities is starkly fixed on a heartbreaking tragedy: the mysterious disappearance of 15-year-old Ja’Derrius Minnieweather, who has been missing for over a week.

An Urgent Search Operation

The situation has become increasingly critical as harsh weather conditions threaten to severely hinder rescue efforts. In response to the escalating crisis, city officials held a press conference on Wednesday, June 17, to issue an urgent plea to the public. In an effort to break the silence and encourage citizens to come forward with information during this “golden window” of time, East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sid Edwards emphasized the vital importance of tips. Despite a minor initial confusion regarding the reward amount, Crime Stoppers has confirmed a $2,000 reward for any actionable information provided within the next 48 hours.

Mayor Edwards expressed his unwavering determination to uncover the teen’s whereabouts: “We need that information. Because I can tell you now, with the law enforcement and the people we have working on this, it’s not if we find out, it’s when we find out.”

A Heart-Wrenching Plea

Ja’Derrius Minnieweather was last seen in the early hours of June 5 in the Baton Rouge area. Since that moment, his family has been plunged into a state of absolute desperation. During the press conference, Tabitha, Ja’Derrius’s aunt, shared a soul-stirring plea on behalf of the family: “I want to thank everybody for every prayer, for all the boots on the ground, all the efforts, all the tips that are coming in. But there’s someone or more than someone out there that knows more. Please, please call CrimeStoppers. You can remain anonymous. Help us bring Ja’Derrius home.”

Mobilizing the Community

The search is not limited to law enforcement; the United Cajun Navy has mobilized a massive volunteer force of over 100 people. They are diligently scouring every corner of the area, from dense wooded regions and bridges to major highways surrounding Baton Rouge. They have pledged to work in lockstep with the Baton Rouge Police Department until Ja’Derrius is located. Beyond their manpower, the United Cajun Navy has also committed an additional $5,000 to the CrimeStoppers reward fund to further incentivize leads.

In an emotionally charged moment during the briefing, Carolyn Coleman, EBR Metro Councilwoman for District 10, sent a spiritual message to the missing teen: “I want to speak to the spirit of Ja’Derrius out there. Wheresoever you are, wherever you are, know that we are beckoning your spirit on onto us and home.”

Ja’Derrius Minnieweather is described as being 5 feet tall, weighing 98 pounds, with brown eyes. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing black sweatpants, a gray-and-black shirt, and red Nike slippers. Reflecting on the family’s agony, Mayor-President Edwards reiterated the community’s shared responsibility: “I know people have been working hard, but none of us should rest until we figure this out. Can you imagine the family? Can you imagine the mother?”
