The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not trademarked the names of their young son and daughter, PEOPLE confirms

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have not trademarked the names of their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, despite reports suggesting otherwise, PEOPLE confirms.

Reports claiming Harry and Meghan have taken steps to secure their children’s names across trademarks came after the Duchess of Sussex’s lifestyle line announced a Mother’s Day collection that included tributes to her children.

The birthdates of Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, were described as the inspiration for Signature Candle No. 506 and Signature Candle No. 604, respectively, paying homage to their birth dates of May 6 and June 4.

Although Prince Harry and Meghan’s children were born as “Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor” and “Miss Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor,” they were afforded the titles of prince and princess when their grandfather King Charles acceded to the throne in 2022. The kids are listed as “Prince Archie of Sussex” and “Princess Lilibet of Sussex” in the official British line of succession to the throne.

The royal titles did not appear on the As ever website when the Mother’s Day collection launched online on April 22. There, Signature Candle No. 506 and Signature Candle No. 604 are described as being crafted and curated by Meghan, “inspired by her son Archie’s birthdate of May 6” and created “to honor her daughter Lilibet’s birthdate of June 4.”

In earlier press materials and product descriptions, the candles were framed using their royal titles, with Signature Candle No. 506 tied to “Prince Archie of Sussex’s birthdate” and Signature Candle No. 604 to “Princess Lilibet of Sussex’s birthdate.” Each candle retails for $64 or can be purchased in larger gift sets, including The Mother’s Day Edit and The Signature Scent Collection.

Unlike their cousins Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, Archie and Lilibet’s royal titles were not announced with their names at birth. The late Queen Elizabeth was still reigning when they were both born, and they arrived as the great-grandchildren of the sovereign.

It was a different situation for Prince William’s three children, as George, Charlotte and Louis were born as the eldest son of the Prince of Wales, when Charles held the title, and received royal titles at birth. (The King named William as the new Prince of Wales after his accession upon the Queen’s death.)

In March 2023, PEOPLE was first to confirm that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were using the royal titles afforded to their children in Princess Lilibet’s christening announcement.

“The children’s titles have been a birthright since their grandfather became monarch,” a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said then. “This matter has been settled for some time in alignment with Buckingham Palace.”

Though King Charles acceded to the throne following his son Harry and Meghan’s step back from their royal roles in 2020, his grandchildren Archie and Lilibet were still eligible for the prince and princess titles that are their birthright.

Queen Elizabeth bestowed her grandson Harry and his bride with the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex on their May 2018 wedding day, which they’ve continued to hold after stepping back from their royal roles.

Speaking to PEOPLE in 2025, Meghan said it meant much for her family to be bonded by their Sussex name.

“It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t recognized how meaningful that would be to me until we had children,” she said. “I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H and I all have together. It means a lot to me.”

The Sussex name, she added, “is part of our love story.”
