The pair were recovered from the water, but sadly died at the scene despite the best efforts of paramedics.

Cops have now confirmed they were a mother and son, aged 34 and seven years.

The force said investigating officers have established “it was a tragic accident”.

Police added that the initial investigation has revealed that the circumstances are “not suspicious”.

Elthorne Park is a popular area which is bordered by the River Brent.

In a statement the Met Police said: “Further enquiries carried out by officers into the incident have established it was a tragic accident and the deaths of the woman and child who very sadly lost their lives are being treated as non-suspicious.

“We can confirm they are a mother and son, aged 34 and seven years.

“This is understandably an incredibly difficult time for them and they have requested that their privacy be respected.”

The force previously thanked emergency crews and members of the public for doing their “very best” in an “incredibly challenging situation”.

A spokesperson said at the time: “Officers are at the scene of an incident in Elthorne Park, Ealing. Police were called at 4.29pm following reports of two people in difficulty in the water.

“Officers attended with the London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade.

“A woman and child were recovered from the water. We are not able to confirm their ages at this stage.

“Very sadly, despite the best efforts of the emergency services who provided urgent medical care, they were both pronounced dead at the scene.”
