SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. — Investigators are looking for a connection between a body found Saturday on the north side of Monterey Bay and the disappearance of a swimmer on the opposite side of the bay six days earlier, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said.
The body was recovered from the ocean south of Davenport Beach about 2 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office said on social media.
“Due to the close proximity to the recent shark attack victim in Monterey County, our agency is working closely with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and the Pacific Grove Police Department regarding the recovery,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “The investigation remains ongoing.”
Erica Fox, 55, of Monterey County was reported missing Sunday at Lovers Point in Pacific Grove, on the south side of the bay. The straight-line distance from Lovers Point to Davenport is about 30 miles.
“Two nearby Monterey beaches were closed Sunday “as a precautionary measure due to unconfirmed shark incident at Lovers Point in Pacific Grove,” the City of Monterey said on social media.
A search for Fox covering 84 square nautical miles was suspended after 15 hours, according to a joint statement Monday from the Pacific Grove Police Department, Monterey Fire Department, Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard.
On Saturday, Cal Fire’s San Mateo-Santa Cruz unit, known as CZU, used a rope system to bring the body from the beach to the bluffs, the agency said on social media.
Davenport is about 10 miles north of Santa Cruz.
A search has been suspended in California for a missing swimmer who may have been attacked by a shark, officials said.
The swimmer, who has been identified as 55-year-old Erica Fox, was reported missing just after noon on Sunday at Lovers Point in Pacific Grove in Monterey Bay, according to a joint statement from the Coast Guard and the cities of Pacific Grove and Monterey.
Two witnesses told ABC Fresno station KFSN that Fox “may have encountered a shark.” Another witness also told the Coast Guard that they reported seeing a shark with a body in its mouth before it submerged.
Boats and helicopters were deployed for Sunday’s search, which lasted nearly eight hours, well past sunset, officials said. The search resumed on Monday morning but was suspended barring any further developments in the case, the Coast Guard said.
The swimmer’s family has been notified, officials said.
Lovers Point Beach in Pacific Grove and McAbee Beach and San Carlos Beach in Monterey are closed through Tuesday, the officials said.
