The city of Townsville, Queensland, endured a sleepless night following a major police operation that brought a violent end to a crime spree that had outraged the nation on Monday afternoon. A group of 10 individuals—eight of whom are juveniles—has been officially taken into custody after police recovered seven allegedly stolen vehicles, including the Isuzu MU-X that served as the centerpiece of a harrowing abduction incident.
“My Soul Left My Body”

The ordeal began at 1:45 PM on Monday on Sunderland Street in the Garbutt area. The victim, a young mother named Sarah, endured what were likely the most terrifying moments of her life when her Isuzu was hijacked by strangers while she was cleaning the vehicle, with her two-month-old baby still sleeping securely in a car seat in the back.
Recalling that traumatic moment, Sarah struggled to contain her distress while speaking with 7NEWS: “My soul left my body.” She added: “It was the most terrifying thing that has probably ever happened in my life, that I’ll probably ever experience.”
In a state of panic, Sarah desperately chased the vehicle, pleading for the offenders to stop. Security footage later captured the individuals pulling the car over and placing the infant onto the curb before continuing their getaway. Upon confronting the perpetrators, the mother set aside her own fear to challenge their actions: “I asked them, I said, ‘why are you doing this? This is my family car. We work hard for this and I need this’.”
After the group fled, Sarah rushed to embrace her child. Nearby neighbors emerged to assist the distraught mother, who was overcome with tears of relief upon discovering that her baby remained physically unharmed.
A Nighttime Pursuit
Townsville District Superintendent Damian Crosby did not mince words when describing the gravity of the incident: “every parent’s nightmare.” He confirmed that the police immediately mobilized every possible resource to provide support to the victim’s family.
With the assistance of PolAir (police aviation), authorities located the stolen Isuzu in a parking lot on Charters Towers Road at approximately 9:45 PM that same day. Alongside it was a white Ford Ranger—a vehicle confirmed to have been stolen the previous day from an address in Railway Estate. Notably, the Ford had been set on fire prior to police arrival, though the flames were quickly extinguished.
The subsequent pursuit was high-stakes, involving the use of tire deflation devices to disable the suspected vehicles. PolAir vision captured the suspects recklessly leaping over fences and darting between suburban homes in the darkness in an attempt to escape, only to be eventually rounded up by closing police units.
The Troubling Reality of Juvenile Crime
A total of 19 charges have been laid against the 10 individuals arrested. The list includes teenagers between the ages of 14 and 17 (hailing from areas such as Kirwan, Kelso, Wulguru, Oonoonba, and Palm Island), as well as a 21-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man. All individuals are already well-known to local police.
Currently, nine of the 10 suspects have been denied bail and remain in custody. Only one 14-year-old girl was granted bail. Superintendent Crosby expressed deep concern regarding the situation: “There is a cohort of offenders who are responsible for the vast majority of the harm being caused to the community. Last night, 10 of those offenders were taken into custody, but we’re not being complacent.”
Although the infant survived unscathed, investigators continue to work actively to determine whether additional accomplices were involved. Superintendent Crosby underscored the severity of the case: “There will be further charges pending, there’s no doubt. We know every time there’s a victim in the community, there’s one victim too many.” Police are currently urging the public to come forward with any CCTV or dashcam footage that could assist in the ongoing investigation.
