A young boy has died days after suffering critical injuries during a multi-car collision on a busy Melbourne freeway.

A boy has died from his injuries days after a multi-vehicle car crash on a Melbourne freeway.

Five cars collided on the Stud Rd off-ramp on the Monash Freeway, in Dandenong North, just after 2pm on Sunday, prompting a massive response by emergency services.

Horrifying images taken by a 7News helicopter shows the aftermath of the crash – one of the vehicles sporting extensive damage.

The occupants of a Mazda 3 – a Sunbury woman, 36, and a 12-year-old boy, were rushed to hospital with critical injuries.

In a statement on Wednesday, Victoria Police confirmed the boy died from his injuries on Tuesday.

A girl, 8, who was also in the Mazda 3, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Three occupants of a Blue Mitsubishi – including a 68-year-old Campbellfield woman, a 39-year-old Glenroy woman and a 6-year-old girl – were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Others travelling in a a BMW, a Volkswagen Tiguan and a white Mitsubishi were not injured.

A Berwick man, 34, who was driving the Volkswagen, was arrested and released pending further inquiries.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
