Authorities in South Yorkshire are urgently conducting search and rescue operations for 11-year-old Mackenzie Swift, who went missing after entering the River Don in Mexborough last Saturday evening.

Heartbreaking Assessment from Police Although underwater searches are continuing, South Yorkshire Police have issued a difficult assessment regarding the victim’s chances of survival due to the length of time he has been missing.

In an official statement, a police spokesperson said: “Our family liaison officers have sadly had the heartbreaking conversation with Mackenzie’s family that if he had not exited the river on Saturday, he could not have survived in the water for this length of time.”. The police also confirmed that, as of now, inquiries have not found any indication that the boy exited the water.

Safety Call from Authorities Mackenzie’s family is currently receiving support from specialist officers. Given the significant public interest, Chief Superintendent Pete Thorp issued a request to local residents: “I understand members of the public are desperate to help, but I must ask that you leave this work to the professional search teams.”.

Chief Supt. Thorp added: “Please do not put yourselves or others in danger by searching in and around water, and if asked to leave by officers, please understand this is for your own safety and to ensure our efforts focus solely on finding Mackenzie.”.

Alarming Context Regarding Water Safety Mackenzie Swift’s disappearance occurs against a backdrop of increasing drowning incidents in the region. Previously, a 13-year-old girl was confirmed dead after getting into difficulty in the River Wharfe, North Yorkshire. According to recent statistics, including the case at the River Wharfe, 17 people have died in water during the recent heatwave, with 14 of those victims being teenagers aged between 12 and 19. Search operations for Mackenzie are expected to continue into early Tuesday morning.
