The question haunting an entire community is painfully simple:
What did Patricia Sheppard do to deserve this?
According to investigators, the answer appears to be nothing at all.
Patricia Sheppard, a 50-year-old woman described by loved ones as a caring family member, friend and beloved mother figure, became the victim of a horrifying act of violence after gunmen allegedly targeted the wrong vehicle during a drive-by shooting in Hammond, Louisiana.
Police say the attack was both deliberate and devastating.
Investigators believe two masked suspects armed with rifles followed a gray sedan to a local gas station. Surveillance footage reportedly shows the suspects pulling alongside the vehicle before opening fire in a barrage of bullets.

Authorities estimate that between 70 and 80 rounds were fired.
But the person investigators believe the shooters were looking for was no longer inside the vehicle.
Instead, Patricia Sheppard was.
In a cruel twist that has shocked even veteran investigators, police believe the intended target had left the vehicle earlier and entered another car without the suspects realizing it. The gunmen allegedly opened fire believing their target remained inside.
The result was catastrophic.
Patricia Sheppard was struck and killed despite having no apparent connection to the dispute investigators believe motivated the attack.
For her family, the details are almost impossible to comprehend.
Loved ones say Patricia was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. She had no idea that a routine stop would become the final moments of her life. One minute she was going about her evening. The next, she was caught in a hail of gunfire intended for someone else.
Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr. reportedly described the incident as the killing of an innocent woman based on a mistaken belief about who was inside the vehicle.
That statement has only intensified public outrage.
Across social media, thousands have reacted with disbelief and anger. Many have pointed to the staggering number of rounds fired, asking how such an attack could happen and why innocent people continue to pay the ultimate price for conflicts that have nothing to do with them.
As detectives continue searching for those responsible, Patricia’s family faces a future forever altered by a tragedy they never saw coming.
Their grief is now shared by a community demanding answers.
The suspects may have believed they were targeting someone else.
But the life they ultimately took belonged to Patricia Sheppard.
And for those who loved her, that is a loss that can never be undone.
