The Gqeberha art community is in mourning following the tragic death of choreographer, dancer and artist Dugulth “Junior King” Ferreira, who was killed in a head-on collision on the N1 near Verkeerdevlei yesterday.
The 29-year-old artist, who had become a symbol of hope and achievement for young people in his community, was among five people travelling in a grey Volkswagen Polo TSI when it collided with a light truck.
King died from his injuries, whilst three other passengers sustained moderate injuries and were transported to Pelonomi Trauma in Bloemfontein for treatment.

As news of his death spread, tributes poured in across social media, highlighting Junior King’s profound impact on his community and the broader South African arts scene.
“A talented young star from the northern areas has tragically fallen. Junior King was distinguished by his remarkable dance moves and rap skills and also dedicated himself to empowering young boys in the Northern Areas through his activism and mentorship. The Bethelsdorp Northern Areas community mourns the loss of another promising young life. May he rest in peace,” read one tribute.
Another mourner expressed King’s significance to the Afrikaans Hip-Hop community: “It is a sad day for us not only for Afrikaans Hip-Hop but for Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), his family, friends and kids.”
A third tribute captured his visible presence in the community: “Junior King has been an inspiration to many and it’s with utter disbelief that we will not see him in the streets shooting music videos or content.”
Born in Kariega and raised in Fernwood Park, Bethelsdorp, King had been passionate about dance from the age of six.
In an interview with PE Express in August, he revealed how his journey began: “I started dancing at the age of 6 and became a choreographer since the age of 8 and was the leader of my school dance group at the time.”
King’s passion for hip hop and dance distinguished him from his peers during childhood. “When I grew up, everyone else was playing soccer, rugby or cricket and everyone wanted to play sport,” he shared. “I played sport but never fell in love with it; I never had a passion for it until I found dancing.”
With more than 20 years of experience in choreography, he had successfully monetised his talent through social media platforms, particularly TikTok, where his performances garnered significant followings.
Beyond his artistic achievements, King was deeply committed to mentoring young people in his community.
He owned and managed the King Dance Studio where he taught aspiring dancers about balancing passion with education: “It is very important to have an academic qualification behind your name because anything can happen in the space of dancing. You could break a leg, so you need an education as a backup.”
His message to young people was one of perseverance and possibility: “Work on your passion as hard as you work on your academic studies because your passion can change your life.”
In a statement released following his death, King’s family described him as “a beloved son, father, brother and artist whose talent and energy touched countless lives.”
The family confirmed that his children are safe and expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from across South Africa.
“We are humbled by the outpouring of love and tributes from fans, friends and fellow artists across South Africa. His legacy as a performer and cultural voice will live on in the hearts of all who knew him,” the family statement read.
The family has requested privacy during their time of mourning and asked the public to keep the injured passengers in their prayers as they recover.
A case docket for culpable homicide has been opened at Verkeerdevlei Police Station as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision continue.
