A newborn baby boy found dead inside a rubbish bin at a unit block in Sydney’s west may have been there for more than a day before he was discovered by a member of the public.

Emergency services were called to an apartment building on Harrow Road in Auburn about 11.20am on Monday after a resident made the tragic discovery while putting her rubbish out.
Acting Superintendent Darren Sly said the newborn was found naked inside a plastic bag in one of the building’s residential bins.
Police believe the baby was only recently born and may have been left in the bin for up to 36 hours.
Officers cordoned off the area and are investigating how the baby died.
As inquiries continue, authorities say they are deeply concerned about the mother’s health and safety.
Police stressed her wellbeing is their only priority.
“If there was to be any police action, that is not our priority whatsoever,” Sly said.
“Our only priority at the moment is for the welfare of that mother and ensuring that she does go immediately to a hospital.”
Police are door-knocking surrounding units and reviewing CCTV footage to identify the mother, as detectives try to piece together what occurred over the past 36 hours.
Speaking to reporters, Sly described the circumstances as “sad and horrific.”

“Officers are professional and do their jobs, but like anybody, they’re human,” he said.
“We’re talking about a newborn baby here. You’re going to have feelings about it.”
