The severed head and other body parts that were discovered in a river mouth in Bali have officially been identified.

Earlier this week, details of the gruesome discovery emerged with speculation the body parts belonged to a Ukrainian tourist who was abducted on the island last month.

Igor Komarov, 28, was ambushed and kidnapped on February 15 by a group of men in a convoy of vehicles during a military-style operation carried out in Jimbaran, a beachside district of Bali popular among Russian and Ukrainian nationals.

News.com.au can now confirm that the severed head and body parts do belong to Komarov, who was driven to a luxury villa on Bali’s mid-west coast and was tortured, drugged and mutilated.

The victim was then forced to appear in a video where he demanded a $10 million ransom from a wealthy Ukrainian businessman.

Several clues found on the body parts, including tattoos on the upper chest sections and two black eyes, suggested a positive match with Komarov. But due to the advanced decomposition of the remains, visual identification was not possible.

The mystery was solved, however, when media channels in Indonesia published a statement issued by Bali police that bone samples sent for testing to the national forensic laboratory in Jakarta delivered a positive match.

“DNA profile from the body parts we submitted was compared with reference samples from the victim’s parents. The results showed a match,” Bali regional police spokesman Senior Commissioner Ariasandy, who, like many Indonesians, goes by only one name, said in a statement.

Dr Nola Margaret Gunawan, a forensic medicine specialist who is performing an autopsy on the body parts at Bali’s Ngurah General Hospital confirmed the results to news.com.au — stating the DNA test were accurate to a probability of 99.9 per cent.

“I double checked with the forensic laboratory in Jakarta because I was surprised to see the news,” Dr Gunawan said. She had previously said the DNA results would take a month to be released.

“They said it was [fast tracked] due to the huge attention to the case, so the process was expedited. Was there a political motive? I can’t answer that. From my point of view as a pathologist, there isn’t anything special about this case.”

Bali police have officially identified seven suspects in connection with the abduction, mutilation and murder. One, a foreign national identified only by his initials CH, was arrested in Lombok, Bali’s sister island. CH had rented one of the vehicles used in the abduction and used a fake passport to enter Indonesia. He later told police he was unaware the car would be used in a crime and that he had simply been tasked by the others to rent the car for $500.

Four of the six suspects fled Bali through the international airport, while the other two are believed to still be hiding in Bali or another province in Indonesia.

All six have been placed on Indonesia’s wanted persons list and Interpol’s Red Notice, a global request for law enforcement agencies to help locate and arrest fugitives.

A person close to the investigation in Bali told News.com.au on condition of anonymity that an eighth suspect, an Indonesian national, has been arrested for issuing CH with a fake passport.

“You should dig deeper to find something bigger behind the case. For me, this case is the result of weak and poor border control in Indonesia,” the person said.

“I travel overseas a lot and I know that the quality of the E-gate at Bali airport is not that good. My own Indonesian passport has been rejected three times at the E-gate. I had to present my passport at a manned desk to get into the country.”

Komarov was holidaying in Bali with his girlfriend, Yea Mishalova, a social media influencer with nearly 200,000 followers on Instagram.

Speculation has been made that a photo she shared of herself and Komarov on Valentine’s Day, the day before the abduction, that reads “F**k 14 February, love you everyday” inadvertently revealed Komarov’s location to his abductors.

Mishalova has not removed the photo from Instagram and has continued to share content from the so-called ‘Island of the Gods’. On March 20, five days after Komarov’s abduction, she posted a video promoting a facial cream, and another video of her dancing at Savaya, a popular day club in Bali.
