Rapper King Von was killed in a shooting that left two other people dead and at least three wounded outside a nightclub in downtown Atlanta early Friday, authorities said.
The 26-year-old musician, born Dayvon Bennett, died at a hospital hours after two groups got into a bloody altercation in the parking lot of Monaco Hookah Lounge around 3 a.m., according to police. Two city police officers also fired their weapons during the shootout, but investigators believe Bennett was struck before cops arrived at the scene.
The Chicago-born rapper was in Atlanta for an album-release party at a different nightclub Thursday night. A preliminary investigation suggests he and a group of men went to the second venue after the party and got into an argument with two other men, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a news release.
The two cops, at least one of whom was working as a security guard for that business, intervened to stop the shooting and fired an unknown number of shots at two separate locations, according to the release. Authorities are still investigating where all the gunshots came from and who fired the fatal rounds that killed the three men.
“The officers did shoot, but we want to ensure we look at the evidence and be able to prove who did what,” Deputy Chief Timothy Peek of the Atlanta Police Department told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution from outside the club.
None of the officers were injured in the shooting.
Surveillance videos that were circulating on social media Friday appeared to show part of the incident. In one of the clips, several men could be seen attacking at least one victim before one of those involved pulled out a gun and fired. The shooting sparked a chaotic scene and it’s unclear if any of the videos shows Bennett.
Police said the rapper either drove himself or was given a ride to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The three surviving gunshot victims were in stable condition, authorities said. Another person who police believe was involved in the dispute sustained injuries after being struck by a car near the club.
Tributes to the rapper began pouring in after friends learned of his tragic death Friday.
“It’s with great sadness that I have to confirm that King Von has passed away,” DJ Akademiks wrote on Twitter. “I spoke with his manager who luckily has survived being shot and is currently recovering in the hospital. However, Von manager did confirm that Von was shot and did not make it.”
“RIP my Bestfriend,” Grammy-nominated producer Chopsquad DJ said in an Instagram post.
“We sat on FaceTime for hours making songs together,” he wrote. “Every bar had a meaning and every song was a part of our soul. Every moment meant something and to grow wit you made me feel like I was a real producer. I love you bro.”

Bennett began his career in 2018 and was known for his tunes “Problems” and “Crazy Story.” He released the album “Welcome to O-Block” last month and had been promoting a new music video that was set to be released Friday, according to his social media feed.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe since the shooting involved two Atlanta officers.
